CraftyCanadian: there definitely is some chemical involvement for some plant fibers, but of these fibers (a particular type of lyocell among them), many completely recycle the chemicals and even the water used for the process to even out the effects altogether. No net addition of chemicals to the enviroment or the fiber!

I'm so excited about Supernatural SweetGeorgia -- Felicia has such a way with these fibers (wait til you see what she dyed in my book), you'll love them, I'm sure.

Thanks for giving me more places to look when I start asking questions. I've been finding it difficult to find answers to the questions about yarn I keep posing. Having a one sided disscusion with can be hard but it's nice to know that others are thinking the same things.

Bravo Sweet Georgia! I've been thinking about this subject for quite a while now and I'm glad to see others thinking out loud about it too. I have always figured there HAD to be some chemical involvement to break down the plants (cellulose) so it can be 'rebuilt' it into fiber. The plant materials may be organic but what about the chemicals? How are they handled? Is there any residual left in the yarn? All questions that rattle around in my head... thank you for openly discussing this! - Amanda
