Pulling back to snap back.

Umm, did someone say hiatus?

in the dye studio

As some of you may have heard already, I am planning on pressing the pause button on both my businesses (one of which I’ve run for the past ten years!) this spring.

Starting April 15th, I will be travelling for at least six months and possibly up to one year. During this time, I will not be able to fulfill any yarn orders. Some of you already have orders set with me and I will be working on them before I leave. But unfortunately, I cannot accept anymore special orders at this point because there are just not enough dye days between now and mid-April to get everything completed. If you would like to purchase my yarns, please do contact the retailers listed on my website. They are all fabulous and helpful and would love to see yarn in your hands!

To me, it’s been obvious that I have been MIA for the past few months — zero movement on the FO front, zero time to do any personal dyeing, or spinning, or weaving. The only way I’ve been able to survive these past few months is with the unconditional support of family and friends — all of whom have pitched in hundreds of hours to wash, dry, reskein, package and label yarn and orders that are shipped out to you. But even with all the help, I still find myself working 18 hour days and 7 days a week. Compounded by working for the past 10 years on my design firm… well… I need a vacation ;P

I would LOVE to be able to work out new colourways using new yarns and natural dyes. I would LOVE to see your new projects in my new yarns. But before all that can happen, I need to recharge and reconsider — see if it is actually feasible to be a production dyer… and sustain that energy over a long period of time.

I sincerely appreciate all the support you guys have shown me and your passionate interest in my yarns during this past year. It is my hope that I will be able to return to the dye pots at a later time with more energy and enthusiasm, brimming with new ideas and experiments that I can share with you all!

<3 SweetGeorgia

PS. I do have a whackload of yarn I’ve stockpiled (accidentally, of course) and will be looking to unload over the next few weeks. Please stay tuned :P

__And just for the hell of it, let’s have a contest. Tell me where you think I’ll be traveling to. One randomly selected commenter who correctly names at least one of the many spots I’ll be travelling to will get yarn. Contest ends Friday, February 16 at 11:59 PM PST.__

I’m glad that you are able to realize that you need a break and that you are taking it! I truly believe that everyone needs reflection and a breather every so often. I just wanted to say how inspired I’ve been by your knitting, photos and yarn over the past two years. Your blog has always been one of my favorites, and I hope we see you back at the end of your travels recharged and ready to share your journey. :)

I hope you are going surfing – hitting all the top surfing spots around the globe. Think of all the shades of green ocean and blue sky and the endless color in thousands of grains of sand between your toes to inspire your soul.
    Cheers to you Felicia.
    You so deserve it.

this seems like the right time to come out of hiding:)
i have admired all of your colorways and yarns for some time – they are just so beautiful and dimensional. despite my admiration, i have never been lucky enough to get my hands on some (when I still lived in calgary, all of your yarns would be snatched up from make 1 yarn studio within hours!) and i’ll be excited to see all of your new ideas and experiments, whenever that may be.

have a wonderful trip – take time to reflect, be inspired and most of all, rest.

I’m thinking you’ll be exploring colorful Thailand, perhaps Japan…or somewhere in Africa…I just can’t decide on which country!

I am going to bet on somewhere slow and sunny. Greece maybe, the colors there are great, the food is great. Or France, to see the old architecture and enjoy their pace of loving life. It doesn’t matter where you go to gather the colors, they will come. Thanks for all the ones you have given us.

  29. Trish says...

It isn’t going to matter where you go as long as you have fun and recoup. Glad you’re taking the vacation but will miss the yarn. :)

Hmm, I’ll say Chile or Australia, maybe even Finland? :-)

  39. Rosa says...

Paris. I think you once said that as a Canadian, it was a language you had to learn. So you may be putting it to good use in France. Have a fun trip (er, trips). The break is well deserved. You have shared so much of your talents with us.

  40. StacyZ says...

You enjoy yourself take the breather you need to find the immense energy it takes to run a business.

Well I guess you are going everywhere ;) but seriously I will guess Africa – I hear there is a lovely wild animal park where you sleep in the trees how rad would that be. Not to mention the Mauritanians (totally don’t know how to spell that one!) off the coast where are truly divine from what I understand.

Have a great trip – Australia, UK, US western states

  49. Shell says...

Enjoy, relax, recharge!! I’m going to say Morroco because quite frankly I want to go!

  50. Steph VW says...

Although we’ll miss you and your yarn while you’re away, (and by we, I mean me and the yarn shop where I work on Saturdays), your well-being is more important than our knitting desires!

And to add to the travel list, let’s see: a cross country trek through Canada? Ok, maybe Peru, Brazil, Thailand, India and Greece.

I’m totally shooting from the hip here!

  51. brooke says...

  54. Ninabeena. says...

Opps hit send too soon! That’s where I’m going later this year. Last year I went to Hawaii. It’s a great vacation spot even if it is typical tourist hotspot. I’ll put that in as my second guess. Hawaii.

I think you are going to Denmark

  56. blossom says...

oooh… I’m going to guess Tibet.

Wherever you go, I hope you find rest and peace!

  61. Cambria W says...

I’m going with France, or maybe Italy. I sure hope that you enjoy your well deserved time off!

  62. Kathy says...

Hope that wherever you go, it’s a wonderful and joyful adventure. I’m guessing India and Southeast Asia.

  63. Tai says...

2 years ago, on my own sabbatical, I discovered yarn and knitting — and immediately decided to start dying yarn. I never quite got around to it, but did spend a lot of time thinking about it and checking out others following that path, such as yourself. I did discover it’s an enormous amount of work! Best wishes for your trip, and I’ll bet you you’re back before I finish my lace stole in your gorgeous laceweight!

I’m voting for Turkey, Morocco, south of France and Spain. Also highly recommend NZ South Island as my favourite stop on my sabbatical. Lovely merino too.

  64. Ana says...

I am happy for you! Hopefully you will blog a lot more regularly after that vacation or even during it ;) I have been reading you blog for more then a year now and missed regular posting.

  65. Kirsten says...

Bravo for you! You will be sincerely missed, but taking six months to explore the world is an experience that most of us can only dream about! Hopefully you will get a moment or two in your travels to post about them.
My guess is that you will be traveling in Asia. So let’s see, how about China, Vietnam, Cambodia, India, Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong?
Thank you for all of the beautiful yarn. I’m glad I’ve had the opportunity to get some, both directly from you and from the Point, before your hiatus.

  66. kyla says...

Well, since you need to recharge, but also like to be active, I’m thinking semi remote, but life affirming. Cambodia, Nepal, Manchu Pichu, Iceland, and New Zealand.

  67. Christine says...

Nepal and Thailand and Australia. Love your yarn and good luck getting some perspective.

  68. Alyson says...

Oh, where wouldn’t you go?? With 6 months to a whole year??? You lucky girl – I love that you’re doing this for yourself, and even though I’ll miss the yarn, I’m really thrilled for you. Have fun…..

(Bali? Thailand? New Zealand? Estonia? Italy? Turkey? You’re a weaver – surely you’re going to Turkey!)

  69. Jennifer says...

All the best to you! I’m going to say New Zealand? Australia? The Seychelles? Vietnam? Have a great rejuvenating and restful time!

  70. Laughingrat says...

Wow, I’m sorry to hear you’ve had so little time for what recharges you. That’s sad. And I have to admit that as I try to get my own dyeing business off the ground in some way, it’s a little scary, too.

We are doing what we do because it refreshes us and makes us happy–if it gets to the point where it doesn’t do either, there’s something really poignant about that. I hope you come to some solutions/conclusions during your travel that will help you figure out how to make the business work for you again, as well as recharging.

Also: Mongolia! Are you going to Mongolia?

  71. Jackie says...

It’s good to step back and recharge. With all the upcoming travel though I hope you’re able to find time to relax some too. Are you possibly going to Japan, Finland, or Chicago?

  72. Brandy says...

I’m going with the Maldives. It seems like the perfect place for someone to go when they really need a break.

Wherever it is, I hope you really enjoy it. Being a new knitter, I’ve never used your yarn, but from what I’ve read a lot of people will be sad. But, you’ve got to take care of you!

  73. Brandy says...

I’m going to guess the Maldives. That is the perfect place for a person to go when they really REALLY need a break.

I hope you enjoy your break. It really sounds like you could use it (18 hours per day every day! Yeouch). Take care of yourself!

  74. jaya says...

I hope you come back recharged and ready to go!

As for my guess, I’m thinking, Taiwan, Australia, perhaps New Zealand.

  75. amanda says...

    enjoy your time away!

i’m guessing you’ll hit france, italy, maybe the antilles…

  76. mama-e says...

I am starting to taste where you are at after 1 year of production… thanks for the thoughts. Here’s hoping for a restful vacation that allows you to catch your inspiration.

  77. ann-marie says...

    i say japan

  78. limedragon :-: Harriet says...

I’ll guess China as one of the places you’ll visit. Have a marvelous trip/vacation. I’ll be sure to knit up the Rusted yarn I bought from your Etsy shop. I hope you’ll post once in a while too!

  79. SamLaTricoteuse says...

Hi Felicia – I am sad but happy for you at the same time… Meanwhile you will be missed but hopefully this little pause will re-energize you… Well, from what i have read in the past years, I would assume that you will go to Asia – go back to some of your roots – Japan maybe… At the same time, this place should have water, sea, as the last hobby you practised was surfing and it seemed that this has it a soft spot !!! Be careful, be zen, and come back !!!

  80. Michele says...

A world surf trip? Costa Rica, Mexico, Hawaii? Love your yarns and wish you all the best.

  81. Julia says...

I think that many of us need breaks in order to re-fuel our creative juices, and it sounds like the past year has brought both difficulties and triumphs in spades. Travel sounds like a wonderful option. I am guessing that you will go to Hong Kong again, but that you will most likely be traveling all over the Pacific. I wouldn’t be surprised if you found your way from Asia to Africa and then to Australia and New Zealand. Oh, I am jealous. I hope you have a wonderful journey and that you’ll find yourself rejuvinated enough to post some photos along the way. xox, J

  82. Susanne says...

I say somewhere in Asia but can’t get any one destination pinpointed! You deserve the break, however I sure hope you return and are able to continue to provide the knitting community with beautiful yarn!!

  83. Susanne says...

I say somewhere in Asia, although I am unable to pinpoint the destination more than that. You deserve the break however, you will be missed and let’s hope that your chance to recharge will have you returning to provide the knitting community with the beautiful yarn we have come to know.

  84. Kelly says...

good for you! I’m gonna guess you’re going someplace in Asia, perhaps Thailand or Vietnam? Wherever it is, enjoy!

  85. Sarah says...

I’d guess Japan as well…maybe China? I know if I were going, I’d be trying to see a good bit of China, maybe take the Trans Siberian railroad through Mongolia, Tibet, Russia, etc. Of course, while you’re over there, might as well see SE Asia, Australia, New Zeland, and naturally the south Pacific….
May I live vicariously through you? Just glad I got some yarn while the getting was good. Have a great time and we’ll save up the yarn dollars til you get back.

  86. Heather says...

I hate to see you leave, but I truely do understand. Please travel safe, you will be missed. Please totaly enjoy every were you go and everything you do.

I believe you might hit Australia, New Zealand and Tieland.

  87. Gretchen says...

Sounds like it’s going to be an amazing trip, wherever you end up!

My guesses…New Zealand, Australia, Bali, Hong Kong.

  88. j a r e d says...

Italy! Please be Rome. (i’m partial… I used to live there) ;)

Will you be blogging at all while you travel or do I have to gear up for a long Felicia withdrawal?

I’m glad to hear you’re making a decision to treat yourself in a way you deserve. Is there anything better than travelling (especially for an extended period)? Thanks for an always beautiful… everything(!)

  89. Lavender says...

I think it’s great what you’re planning on doing. Everyone needs an experience like that at least once in their lifetime. My guess would be China and Tibet.
    :)

  90. Marie says...

I can’t decide! Peru or Bolivia?

  91. Hanna says...

If you come to Europe, I recomend the northen part of Norway, it is beautiful – and northern part of Sweden, because it is where I live. Right now we have lots of snow, but in the summer we have nice weather, beautiful mountains and further up north – the midnight sun. :-)

    take care

  92. Tasha says...

I agree with everyone else — it’s great that you’ll be able to take a lengthy break! I’m going to guess that you’ll be going to France.

  93. June says...

Production dyeing is a hella lot of work. Running 2 jobs is just hell. I’m glad that you’re taking some time off. A vacation is much better than a breakdown, you know what I’m saying?

If you (and hubby? Not traveling alone for a year, are you?) come to Minnesota, you have a place to stay. We’d love to have you.

  94. Heather says...

I would vote for scandinavia too, Norway and Finland. But Austria is gorgeous… Along with northern Italy and southern Germany. Lots of beautiful color and quiet areas up in the Alps, especially during the sunsets.

But have you thought of a wild trek, like the rain forests in South America? I keep hearing that Costa Rica is stunning, and you could go from gorgeous beaches with some of your colorways to volcanoes and rain forests with foliage and flowers from some of your other colorways.

I will be looking forward to your return also, wherever you choose to go. Lots of inspiration, even though I haven’t been fortunate enough to find some of your yarn yet.

  95. Amanda says...

If I had my choice I’d be in New Zealand, so that’s my guess.

  96. Mintyfresh says...

Congrats on making what must have been a tough decision–sounds as if it’s just what you need to open new avenues.

With that in mind, I am guessing you’ll be going Scotland amongst other places :)

  97. Dara says...

Scotland and or Ireland….that’s where I’d go.

    Dara

  98. Dara says...

Scotland and or Ireland….that’s where I’d go.

    Dara

  99. irina says...

    my guess is europe

  100. Mama Urchin says...

My guess is Bali but I’ll throw in Paris too. It’s always wonderful to end up in Paris.

  101. gleek says...

damn, i’m sorry to hear that you’ll be on hiatus from yarn dyeing but happy to hear that it’s because you’ll be relaxing and traveling. wow, 6 months to a year! that sounds absolutely delightful.

i’m going to guess that you’ll hit at least one of the following three destinations: japan, china, and australia.

please blog about your travels! i love hearing about where people go.. especially since i can’t travel anywhere for a long while.

  102. Danielle says...

I think you’ll be in Southeast Asia. Maybe Thailand or Singapore?

  103. Ann Jackson says...

I’m going to guess…China and Turkey.

  104. Dotty says...

You deserve a break. However, we will be sorry to see your yarn go MIA. I need to put in a special request to 3 bags full so that I have enough to last me a year. I’ve only got 4 skeins of sweetgeorgia sock yarn. I’m knitting 2 pairs of socks a month so that’s only enough yarn for one month. Eeek!

BTW, I think one of your vacation stops is Australia.

  105. Alison says...

I understand the need to recharge, but I do love your yarns and hope you decide to continue. I’m guessing England and Ireland. No reason, just because.

  106. Robin says...

All the best to you for your upcoming travels. What a great opportunity to have! I hope you visit some fabulous destinations, one of which could be Bangkok?

  107. carol says...

I’ll be that you are going to Australia and New Zealand. Land of the sheep, of course. Well, its where I’d go, now, if I could. THEY have summer, while we’re having dreary. Wherever you go, have a well deserved great time.

  108. April Smith says...

I don’t have the slightest clue as to actual locations – but I hope that where ever you go you have REST! I hope you have the means to go where ever your heart delights.

  109. Isobel says...

    Maybe South Africa?

  110. Therese says...

    L E S O T H O !

  111. Nymue, Eveilleuse Créative says...

South America, Australia, and New Zealand… Maybe Europe also, coz Paris is a place to stay ;o)

Enjoy ! (I’ll be in New York for a week at the beginning of March ! :o ))

  112. anne says...

Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, Vietnam, India, Mozambique, Morocco, Madagascar, Italy … okay, I’ll stop. I’m just naming all the places *I* want to go! I think it’s fabulous that you’re doing this, and I’m happy to help take yarn off your hands!

  113. Laura says...

Felicia, Have a wonderful and rejuvinating break. I’ve been thinking about you a lot, wondering how you’ve been feeling about the yarn biz as time goes on. I’m glad I haven’t pushed myself to do big things. I always have felt that keeping it small and keeping it in my kitchen means that I can stop or start pretty much any time. With Wendy recently knitting a pair of socks with the Slayer colorway I’ve been eyeing the skein I have in my stash thinking “I bought it way back when she was still doing this on etsy.” Gosh. Maybe it’s a collector’s item now? heh

    Take care of yourself.

And I think…. Paris, French countryside, England, Scottland, Ireland, Wales, Turkey, Japan, Tibet, New Zealand, Australia. Oh so many places to dream of. Have a wonderful time. :)

  114. Amber Lee says...

I hope where ever you go it will be fabulous and inspiring. I’m going to guess Peru!

  115. Amanda says...

Given your new found love of surfing I think you might search out some waves… Australia, California, Baja…

  116. keaton says...

There’s nothing like world travel to rejuvenate, excite, & enthrall. Long periods of time on the road can have a profound effect on a person … I’m sure the same will be true for you.

My guesses are: India (Ahmedebad, the textile capital, maybe?), Vietnam & Thailand.

Wherever you go, I wish you much adventure (and safety) on your travels.

  117. freecia says...

My guesses include other areas of Canada, West Coast of United States, Mexico, Japan, New Zealand, Italy, Spain, and China.

Hope you have a wonderful time! And note, there’s some super inexpensive silk sleepsacks for sale on eBay. Bed Bugs do bite.

  118. Leah says...

France, England, Spain and Italy. Oh, and Japan.

  119. kim says...

Hmmm, let say Ireland, England, Scotland, China, India.

Good for you. Have a great time!

  120. Cassie says...

You are one of the only bloggers that I truly enjoy reading. You’ll be missed.

    Enjoy yourself! Traveling is wonderful.

    I’ll guess… Ireland, India, and/or Brazil.
What a trip that would be.

  121. Adam says...

Hmmm, I’ll guess Italy! Hope you have a fantastic time, and get to decompress and do some things for yourself!

  122. barb says...

Treat yourself to the time you need…and then a little more!! I vote for Thailand, New Zealand or Japan. Bon voyage. Thank you for your inspiration and sharing your journey with us!

  123. Mary says...

:( Sad to hear that you’ll be gone for quite a while. I was so excited a couple of months ago I finally had the chance to hit 3 Bags Full and I bought 2 skeins of your sock yarn in Velvet Underground. I just started knitting it up in Grumperina’s Jaywalker pattern. I’m loving it so far and hopefully you’ll be able to re-stock 3 Bags Full, so the next time I visit, I can get more. :)

I do hope you decide to continue with this whole yarn business. ;) Your choices of colour are so vibrant and beautiful. And if you decide to not continue, well, I’m glad I had the opportunity to knit myself some socks with some of your precious yarn. Thank you.

As for where you’re going? My gawd! I’m awfully jealous that you’re travelling for so long. I’m not financially capable/strong/courageous enough to let things go and just do it! I hope you get to travel everwhere your heart desires. That maybe you’ll go to, say, Peru (that’s my guess) and learn about dyes and yarn there. To become motivated, to learn, to grow.

    All the best to you.
    Mary

  124. Maris says...

Good for you to recognize what you need! I wish you luck in whatever you decide and safe and happy travels.

My guesses are Singapore, Philippines, New Zealand, Alaska, Uraguay and Holland! Have a great time and enjoy yourself.

  125. melissa says...

my guess is india or thailand. happy travels!

  126. Josiane says...

Enjoy your time off and away!
I’d say that your trip will include a stop in Iran. You’ll find lots of inspiration there. The country, the landscapes, the architecture, the colors, the arts (textile and otherwise), and most of all the people, pretty much everything there is magical. I know what I’m talking about: I’ve been there twice, loved it, and will definitely go again…

  127. Kim says...

I’m going to guess China or Tibet. I don’t know why, other than those are 2 places I would love to go to….those and Tahoe :-)

Production anything is tough after awhile. I know I am going to hang up my production hat for a little while too. It’s hard not to get burnt out.

    Enjoy your “you” time!

  128. susie gardner says...

i’ll miss your yarn, and i’ll envy you your travels! make the most of it, but don’t be afraid to just relax, too.

i choose paris because that’s where i go when i need to check out from my real life.

  129. Jade says...

I’m sorry to hear you’re going on hiatus, but glad to hear you’re going on vacation! It seems obvious but I’d have to guess that one of your stops would be Japan.

p.s. – I am seething with jealousy that you support yourself by working with yarn. :)

  130. Jen says...

Scotland…Just think of all those sheep! No matter where you go enjoy your time away.

  131. Jessica says...

Have fun in Greece! I mean Scotland and Ireland! I mean Brazil! While you’re gone I will be admiring the gorgeous yarn at the top of this post and wishing I could feel it. Enjoy your well-deserved break!

  132. Nicole says...

I’m guessing places where surf may be found… Australia and Hawaii? Maybe Bali?

  133. Caro says...

    ireland

  134. Tanya says...

No wonder you are burned out! That is way way too hectic. I always wondered how you managed all that you do, now I know!
How exciting, an extended travel. Please maybe post a few times while you are gone so we can all live through you.
    Where to? India.
No wait it was where you wanted to go not me.
    Southeast Asia.

  135. bunchkin says...

I’m going to guess a trip down the Amazon? :-)

  136. Margaret says...

I’m guessing Austrailia or New Zealand.

  137. Lily says...

To Penang, Malaysia so you can hand in the yarn to me! Hahahaha

  138. Bea says...

Oh! There are so many lovely places to go. Why not start out with the southern hemisphere, its warm in Australia and New Zealand this time of year. But Italy is usually my favorite in the winter. Whereever you are going, rest a lot and recharge a lot. I’m sure you deserve it!

  139. Michaela says...

My guess is that you’ll go to Lesotho — your friend’s post about her travels there was absolutely inspiring! Enjoy your travels, and I hope that taking a break gives allows you some space to breathe and re-energize.

  140. Kate says...

A much needed break I’m sure – dyeing takes alot out of you, esp. as a business! Enjoy your break, hope it’s relaxing and rejuvinating! I’m guessing Seattle, Japan, Australia, and Thailand…

  141. melissa says...

Wow! Sounds like a much, much deserved vacation, good for you!

I’m going to guess you’ll be visiting Australia.

  142. Erika says...

    Good Luck!
My guess? Tibet, Malaysia, and Budhapest

  143. kitty kitty says...

My thoughts will be with you as you look for a recharge of your energy and creativity. Working killer hours for so many years really does take a toll on the body and soul. Days that turn into nights and clients that don’t understand.

You have to take a breath.

    So some of my guesses would be;
Nagoya – maybe to visit the last remaining silk kimono mills and the two 100 year old brothers that are weaving the silk scrolls before they die

Tibet – to find an inner peace

Hangzhou and Suzhou – as the 700ad chinese poet wrote heaven on earth and Marco Polo proclaimed “Venice of the East”

Putuoshan – the temple island across from Hangzhou Bay

Nagano – to visit village untouched by modernization and learn local crafts

Kofar Mata – to visit the indigo dyeing pits

London – to visit the Victoria and Albert Museum
Bath – to visit the Fan museum branch of the Victoria and Albert Museum

Taipei – to visit the National Museum since we all know all the good chinese art was carried with the people during the cultural migration in ‘49.

Belfast – To visit the last historical Irish Linen mills

Ok… Those are my dreamy locations. Enjoy and safe travels.

  144. Frith says...

Sounds like a good plan. Have a wonderful time.

I’ll guess Japan, China, France, and Italy.

  145. Sharah says...

I think you are going to China. I just have a feeling about it. Not sure where in, but have a good time! ;) Enjoy your vay-cay!

  146. Debbie says...

Paris, Prague, Vennia, multiple places in Italy

  147. Kristen says...

    the seychelles islands.

Glad to hear that you’re taking care of yourself in such a fantastic way. Good luck, good inspiration, good food and safe travels.

  148. Trish says...

Oh, color me jealous! I would love to be able to travel for six months (of course I would have to tow 2 kids along for the ride). I hope you have tons of fun wherever you are going, but for the sake of winning prizes, I am going to guess Thailand, New Zealand, Australia, Japan, Hawaii and Mongolia. Oh and possibly somewhere in Europe like Greece or the Netherlands.

I guess Sweet Georgia will soon become a collectors item…

  149. Collette says...

I pick Thailand but wherever it is, have a wonderful, relaxing time. I’m glad you’re able to take this time off.

  150. yin says...

Come to Australia :) its a huge country and every state is unique and you will definitely be able to a diversity of cultures….and scenary …Ruggard outback terrain …fishing… surfing… and even skiing (if the season is correct).. and its right on the other side of the world… to get away… to go downunder… lol…
On a different note, I am a huge fan of your yarns, if you are intending to let go of some of your stock, please let me know…i would most definitely like to order some
cheers and take care…. happiness is above-all most important :)

  151. Dani says...

Wow! What an amazing year you are going to have! Kudos to you for realizing that you need a break :) We will miss you… Hopefully you will be posting pictures from all the far off places?! I say you are going to be in New Zealand, Fiji and Hawaii?!

  152. chris says...

so sorry to hear this but at the same time so very excited (and jealous)! all the best to you!

wherever you go i’m sure you’re going to have *the* most wonderful and inspiring trip. there’s too many places in the world to visit – i’m guessing you might make a couple of stops in europe – places like switzerland, austria, france, belgium, or the netherlands perhaps? (ok – i admit i’m a bit biased since those are my favourite countries to visit…) :)

  153. chris says...

  156. Cheryl says...

Good luck – I’ve bought your yarns (lots of them!) in the past, and think they are absolutely beautiful.

My guess is India – if not, I would recommend adding it to your list of destinations. The colours the women wear there are truly beautiful and inspiring. The spice markets are a feast for the senses. And if you get to see the Taj Mahal…it will take your breath away.

  157. Rossana says...

Hi! I’m guessing you will visit Nepal/Bhutan. It sounds dreamy.

And I’m so bummed (but excited for you) that you will be traveling and thus unable to continue stocking your shop for the duration. I’ve waited to purchase some of your highly regarded yarny goodness and am now kicking myself.

Well, enough chatter from me…I must now go hunt down some of your Sweet Georgia yarns.

    Bon voyage!

  158. Rossana says...

Another guess–traveling the Silk Road? =)

  159. Esther Hsu says...

I’m really glad that you are taking a vacation :)
I’m guessing you will be going to Japan, Thailand, and Italy . Have a great time!

  162. monique says...

Good for you doing what you need to do and thank you for sharing your work with us. We will miss your beautiful yarns! My 9 year old daughter and I have made several trips to 3 Bags Full to get your sock yarn for her. She loves your colours so much that she chooses 2 different colours for each pair of socks, – a sock knitter’s dream! I didn’t realize that I should have been stockpiling. I think you are going to go to Maui (great surfing), and Viet Nam.

  163. Heide says...

6 months is a long time. I’ll guess you’re heading to the dark continent of Africa.

  164. Melita White says...

I say you’re going to Shanghai, China.

  166. scout says...

Recently I’ve been reading through your posts and loving how you share you amazing experiences with color. I hope you have a great vacation.

Lately I’ve been wondering how long I can keep this up and I probably do a 10th of what you were/are doing!

    Take Care!

  167. debbie says...

i will miss hearing your blog voice, but am happy for your needed sabbatical. i imagine you’ll be hitting europe and try to see germany, holland, italy, scotland, ireland…and if you have time go to new zealand, and then of course venture to africa….enjoy and know we are all thinking of you and wishing you the best!

  168. christine says...

I would venture to say Tibet or the Fair Isle off Scotland/Norway.

  169. Suzanne says...

Let’s see a hiatus of 6-12 months. I think you will probably hit Japan AND Europe.

I hope you have a fabulous and relaxing time, though we will definately be missing your yarn. And here I was hoping you would come back with the Versaille colorway again (My favorite colors).

I love your yarn and have on my Slayer socks as I type this.

    I wish you well!!

  170. Toby says...

I’m going to say Bangkok just for fun. I really have no idea. :)

  171. kate says...

    New York City
We will miss you and I know I will be looking for you to come back refreshed and a better person because of it. I know how it is to take a break from a business that you have honed to be something that you love and how it can take over your life, I stepped away from my storefront business in august to go to a smaller studio behind my home and I will say that this is the best decesion that I could have made for me and for my family. Good luck and I hope that you have fun.

  177. Nancy says...

    Thailand!

  178. Arianie Keeney says...

If I were you I’d visit Singapore, Bali and Indonesia. Singapore because that’s where I was born and lived a quarter of my life. It is an awesome country, Singapore has too many overachievers like you (ahem I’m one of them) and Singapore’s top notch service and international aura will inspire you to lengths not forgetting the yumm food! Think Char Quay Tiao and Hokkien Mee – I’m absolutely hungry now. Bali because that’s where all the artists are and the temples and islands it will change your life! Really! Think Cosmic energy and Tree of Life. Weavers, spinners and dyers thrive in Bali – Plus I’m half Balinese. Other parts of Indonesia so you can do some good along the way to help those ravaged by the tsunamis, earthquakes and the darn floods.

    Arianie

  179. Jen says...

China – to examine part of your roots

  180. Projektleiterin says...

I say Vietnam, Germany, Australia. I’d love to go on such a long trip, too!

  181. Shannon says...

Enjoy your time off – it sounds like it is *very* well deserved!

And I’m guessing Scotland and Ireland (well the British Isles I suppose I should say, but those two places specifically). =)

  182. Lolly says...

Best wishes, Felicia! Just to throw my guess in: the Canary Islands? :) i didn’t see that one thrown out there yet…

  183. mel says...

I’m a coveter of your yarns, but so pleased to hear that you are taking a much needed break – nothing wrong with that!!!

I’m guessing Iceland! I hope wherever you are going you have a very enjoyable, restful time!

  187. Joanna says...

Sounds like a wonderful trip is on the way! Good luck!
I think you’ll be travelling to Japan (that’s where I would definitely go! ^^) and to some Scandinavian countries (my next choice). Or maybe totally different direction: South America: Brasil, Peru, Equador? Wherever you go, have fun!

  188. kelly says...

Hmm… surfing in Australia/ New Zealand, a la the movie Endless Summer… Visiting Europe, walking along the Alps and in all those little villages with the quaintest of yarn shops…. Japan and China, walking on the Great Wall and peering up at Tokyo Tower (I think? the great big colorful one)…man, now I want a vacation, too!

You will be missed. Rest up and enjoy your travels.

Germany, France, Spain, Portugal and England

  190. Megan A. says...

It’s always good to have a break now and then. The only thing that keeps me going these days in school is knowing in August I will be all done and can take a vacation.

I guess one of your destinations is going to be

    Turks & Caicos

I hope you bring your crochet bikini ;)

  191. Stephanie says...

    I’m going to guess India.

    Have a fantastic trip!

  192. amy says...

i think these answers have already been chosen, but for anyone who has followed your posts for the past year, they are good ones =]

narita, japan – for family (is your dad still there with your grandmother?)
new zealand – for the surfing. you mentioned how much it empowered you, and that sounds like something the doctor ordered for this period of restoration.

wherever your travels find you, may you be blessed with comfort & well-being throughout your adventures. for all that you have inspired me, i wish you the all restoration and inspiration and fantastic new experiences you richly deserve.

  193. Elizabeth says...

I’m going the exotic route and guessing at least a brief stop over in Fiji!

  196. Marja-Liisa says...

I’ll go for Iceland, Norway and Scotland.

  197. Kathy says...

For that length of time, I say Australia.

  198. Joanne says...

My guess is that you’ll be trekking in Nepal and visiting the base camp of Mt. Everest.

  199. Thi says...

I absolutely admire your works: spinning, weaving, dying, photography. Just amazing! I guess Japan, New Zealand, and Mexico. But wherever you may go, best wishes on your travels.

  200. Marisol says...

I say: France, Italy, and England.

  201. Rachel says...

Mongolia, China, India? Perhaps a whirlwind tour through Australia and New Zealand?

I’m a lurker by the way. Congrats on travelling!

  202. Jo-Anne says...

I think you’ll be stopping in France….. and Wales.

  203. Rosemary says...

  205. Sandy says...

Have a great holiday!!……I am guessing Asia…Vietman, Cambodia, Thailand, China, Japan.

  206. Katina says...

Hey there, I will miss reading your blog! It was the first knitting blog I can across and was a REAL inspiration to me and my knitting (- and then obsession with knitting). You even got me interested in FIREFLY. But I will be very happy for you as you try to rest and recharge yourself. I think your travels will include Singapore. I hope you will be blogging when you get back. Sincerely, a fellow Vancouverite, Katina.

  207. Shannon says...

I think you may find yourself at Tierra Wools near Chama, New Mexico, maybe a visit to Australia, Japan, India and even Turkey!

  210. Vicki says...

thank goodness you are taking break before you collapse! Enjoy your holiday and then wehen you get back you can decide what is best for you. australia is great this time of year, but Italy is a wonderful place. Lots of lovely textiles! Have a great time and recharge.

  211. Peggy says...

Cambodia, Nepal, India (random guesses) Japen, Taiwan?

  212. Kristiana says...

I’m a college student who discovered your site while procrastinating at work last summer, and have enjoyed reading about your fiber artistry ever since! Reading about your experiences helped keep me sane on the slow days when my boss had no work for me to do. :-)

I’m going to guess . . . New Zealand, Australia, France, Switzerland, and the Philippines. Just ‘cuz.

  213. Ama says...

Berlin, Frankfurt, anywhere in Germany… I’d be glad to meet you here this spring! Take care

  214. cari says...

I just found out about you and your yarn from Lettuce Knit and at the same time find out that it will soon be unavailable. Alas! Oh well, I have managed to get one skein, at least. It is amazing.
I would guess you’ll be travelling all over, with 6 mths to a year on your hands, but specifically I’ll guess Australia and New Zealand. Best wishes for a revivifying and restorative hiatus.

  217. allison says...

    I hear ya, girl! Decompress!

If you were like me you may go to Italy, France, Thailand or India!

    Good luck!!

Hope you have great adventures in … hmmmmmm … I’m guessing, Australia, Iceland, Greece.
    Enjoy your well deserved vacation!

  219. Janine says...

Wherever it is you are going, have fun! I would guess at India, then up through Tibet and on to China:-)

  220. Lisa Howie says...

I’m new on your blog – beautifyl things! What luck – a chance to win yarn! I’ll guess all over the place. How about Peru, Scotland, or China?
    Looking forward to reading/seeing more.
    Lisa

  221. laura says...

    Felicia,
I’ve never commented before, but I’ve been reading a long time…if I may be so bold, I really, really hope you will continue to blog. You have seemed from your posts to be a thoughtful, introspective person (I’m thinking particularly of the post after your return from your grandfather’s (?) funeral), and I’d like to hear more of your perspective, particularly as you enter this new stage in life. Peace and good luck to you.

  222. Michelle says...

Oh no! Going on hiatus just as I’ve finally gotten my hands on some of your yarn for the first time!

Let’s see… where might you visit? How about New Zealand (in keeping with the woolly love)? I also recommend Japan (great textile arts), Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia… I could go on — I guess I’m concentrated in Asia and I haven’t even begun to list European countries — but I’ll stop there!

  223. Chloe says...

It sounds like a much-needed and well-deserved break. If I were going to relax for a while, I’d go to Portugal, Mexico, India (especially Kerala or somewhere in South India- Cochin is just fantastic) or maybe Iceland in the summer. Anyway, have fun wherever you go! Your yarns are just lovely!

  224. Michelle says...

6+ months of travel – or hiatus – sounds AMAZING. I’m going to guess surfing in Australia and visits to China and Japan (same hemisphere, so why not?). Wherever you go, have a fabulous time.

  225. heather says...

I figure the Maiwa workshops got to you and you’re going to India. Have fun!

  226. Johanna says...

I have only just found out about your stunning yarns – so will miss you much! But cannot begrudge a well-deserved hiatus.

I will guess your destinations may include lovely Costa Rica, Chile, or Peru. Central and South America may not be the first things springing to mind when one things of knitted woolies, but indeed the indigenous arts include many fine textile crafts and the verdant and varied landscapes would be many a fine dye-inspiring experience.

    All the best.

  227. heather says...

No, wait!! I know – you’re running off with Eunny! She’s been MIA for about 2 months now. Is there a secret yarnlover’s paradise that we don’t know about?

  228. Jess says...

I think you’ll be in India for at least a little bit.

I’ll miss your posts! Have a great trip!

  229. Emma says...

Oh! I’m so jealous. You are incredibly smart to take this break before you started hating everything that you love.

I think you should be going to Tibet. I have friends that went there a couple of months ago and the trip changed their lives, absolutely for the better. Jen came home, took a leave of absence from her real job and jumped into her dream of becoming a yoga teacher. Sounds like that’s the kind of trip you need.

  230. Nubiancraftster says...

Good luck on your traveling. I am sure you will come back rejuvenated. Place I have enjoyed and think you will be going to are Spain, France, Italy, Prague, or Japan. Have fun wherever you go!

  231. kristen says...

So many different places to go! Someone obsessed with color might go to Mumbai or Thailand. Someone obsessed with wool might traverse Canada or head to Scotland for some Shetland, or Australia and New Zealand.

But you didn’t say this is a fiber-related vacation. You might instead be heading to someplace that will completely undo all the fiber-stress. Kenya, or South Africa. Perhaps a cruise in the Caribbean!

  232. weezalana says...

I’m going to guess…India, Vietnam, Thailand, Bali, Hawaii and Paris!

  233. wendy says...

    Well, I know you’ll visit America.lol.
Anyway, I hope you find what you are searching for. This life we’re given is too short not to do all we can.
May the light within guide your feet.

  234. Tasha says...

I am so glad to see that you are taking time for yourself! Like everyone else, I really hope that you have a fantastic vacation and really enjoy and savor the time away. I think that you might go to India, Northern Ireland, Singapore, South Africa or possibly even Alaska :) Wherever you go, have fun and be inspired!

  235. Marie says...

Well, I know you’ve been to Asia recently, but I was thinking that India would be unsurpassed for creative recharging. (Stay safe!) And there’s the south-east swing of the Pacific Rim which might let you get in some mighty fine surfing. Bali has great textiles AND surfing. You could stop by Taiwan and China too if you pleased.

  236. Sara says...

I would guess you are spending your holiday travelling around Europe. I’m sure that you will enjoy it, wherever you go!

  237. Meg Caulmare says...

Good morning – I understand a hiatus, too. Reflecting is an important part of the creative process, and you need time and quiet to do it. Thank God I’ve got a little stash, though.

Hmmm, I have to guess that the designer in you will want to get to Florence for the art and Milan for the fashion (and anywhere else in Italy for the food). And I also hope that for a fiber fix you get to Australia, New Zealand, and Peru for the fiber and the spiritual boost.

Wherever it is, travel with joy and come back safely.

  238. Beth says...

Wow, this sounds like a great idea. For 6 months-year, I think Europe is probably the area of the world that I would love to explore. How about Morocco, Spain, Switzerland, the Netherlands? And maybe the South of France…..

  239. Michelle says...

My guess is Italy. That’s where I’d go if I had 6 months!

  240. Sarah says...

mmmm, let’s see – how about Peru? Love your yarn and hope you have a wonderful time on your travels!

  241. ZhiWen says...

Hmm.. could it be Japan again?

You will be missed, I always lurk around your blog, your posts are wonderful to read (and see). And your yarn will be missed too!!

  242. Joanne Snyder says...

I think you will bw traveling to Ireland, Scotland to see the sheep who give us some of the best fleece.

  243. Jasmin says...

    Taiwan?

    Have a great sabbatical! :)

  244. Emily S. says...

I’m going to say Italy and/or Peru.

  245. Gwyn says...

Peru! Stunning textiles in Peru. And hiking and maybe surfing in the Pacific.

Or Morocco (mainly because I want to go to Morocco).

I just discovered Speed Demon socks, and I LOVE them. I’ll go to my local retailer today and buy up the rest of it!

  246. Venus says...

Ohh, I am sooo jeleous! Lets see… Australia (I highly recommend Byron Bay), Peru, Japan, India or Agentina? Wherever you go, be safe and have fun!!!!

  247. beth says...

Good for you! You deserve it!

I think you will be visiting family, was it Japan? Then I think you will be off to Europe then somewhere warm. Fiji? Did I spell that right?

    Have fun!

  248. Lyssa says...

i have to guess the place taht I would most like to go: New Zealand.

  250. rose says...

i hope you have a wonderful trip and that you find what you need. i just wanted to write to say that i’ve gotten such inspiration and pleasure and color and ideas and all kinds of good stuff from your blog for the past year and half. i’ve only been lurking until now, but i felt like it was time to say hi, and bye. it’s been so interesting and inspiring watching your progression into dying, weaving, etc. thank you for taking the time to share this with all of us. i’ll miss you.

  251. Tomoe says...

You’re going to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania before global warming melts its snowy peaks.

  252. Tipper says...

    Have a wonderful, relaxing hiatus!

My guess is that you’ll spend some time in Provence, France. Who doesn’t want to do that?

  253. Helen says...

    Europe! All over Europe!

  254. Helen says...

Europe! All over Europe! and then Africa! All over Africa!

  258. Bronwyn says...

Go to New Zealand. I went for five weeks last christmas and it was easily the most wonderful holiday I’ve ever taken. You’re never more than 2 hours from a beach, and they’re ALL beautiful. Plus, go down to South Island and go SKIING! If you like the outdoors at all, it’s a great place. Wherever you choose to go, have a great time and stay safe.

  259. June P says...

Glad to see you know when to take a break! My guess is Europe (the UK, Scotland, France, and Italy!) Good luck with your journey!

PS: If your sick of your FairIsle Cardigan by Meg Swansen, I would be more than happy to rescue it from you! lol -

  260. Ruth says...

Good for you! I am going to guess that you are going to New Zealand, Thailand or I am going out on a limb here and say Peru. Wherever you go, best wishes to you!

  261. Erin says...

I hope you’ve picked the most rejuvenating places you can think of. Sounds like a little personal TLC wouldn’t hurt. And thanks for all the gorgeous yarn.

I’m going to make my guesses too though I can’t imagine I’ve thought of a destination not already on the cumulative list.
    Thailand (Phuket, maybe?);
    Italy (Tuscany or Capri (Go to Capri!));
    Somewhere in the Andes (where the elevation is really high and the weaving really interesting);
    The Netherlands.

I’ll stop there. Enjoy your journey!

  262. Liza says...

Fiji! Felicia- I will miss you! I check your blog everyday. I hope you find inspiration and adventure….

  263. Olgajazzzy says...

Oh, Felicia, wishing you all the best and a great recharging trip! All designers need inspiration and mudance every day toil makes it go away at some point!
My guess would be Japan, China or South Africa =)
    Happy travels!

  264. Carol says...

    Enjoy your break.

Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand.

Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, Australia and New Zealand.

  266. Sarah says...

I’m going to say South Africa and Russia (two countries I haven’t been to but are on my list). If you need advice or hints for Mongolia or Tanzania (two guesses I’ve seen in the comments and also two places I’ve been), let me know!

One of these days I’ll get to take an extended trip… for now I just have to content myself to 10-day jaunts.

  267. Barb says...

What a great idea. I hope you stop in New Zealand or Australia. They have lots of sheep there.
    Safe journey:)

  268. Sarah says...

I’m going to guess the South of France (Provence/the Riviera). Warm, easy to travel around from, and it’s where I would go. (As good a reason to guess that as any!)

  269. Firefly Kelly says...

    Australia! New Zealand!

  270. Carrie says...

Wherever you go I’m sure it will be fabulous.

    Japan, Norway, Thailand, France?

  272. Katie says...

I say the UK – England or Ireland.

  273. Daisy says...

Back to Japan? Take care of yourself and good luck on the baby front…

  274. Mallory says...

    India

  275. Kate A. says...

I’m going to pick the places I’ve lived (outside the US), because it would be cool to have them in common (sort of): Norway (specifically the Hedmark region, around Hamar) and Russia (specifically Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Ivanovo). I found great yarn in all these places, and hope you will too, wherever you go!

  276. Amanda says...

I’m guessing that you’ll be touring Europe and Asia, so just for the sake of specifics, I’ll say that you will make stops in Hong Kong, Rome, London, the Phillipines, and maybe even Russia. I’m sooo jealous of your journey!

I am going to guess Italy- because it is the most beautiful place!

    Have fun!

Nova Scotia! Cambodia! Perhaps Scotland? :)

  283. Uli says...

You’ll be missed while your on your travels and I look forward to knitting my one hank of beautiful lace yarn I have of yours.

I think you’ll be hitting Europe at some point and making stops in Germany and Austria.

  284. Jody says...

London, Paris, Venice, Rome, Santorini, Madrid, Tokyo (some of my favorite places)

  285. Deepa says...

SE Asia and India? If you’re thinking India, email me! Having lived there for 28 years, I’m somewhat of a subject matter expert. Have a great time, wherever you do go!

  289. miss violet says...

Wow. I like your yarn, too, but I’m not *quite* as adamant as that last poster. Hooboy. :)

Seriously, though, OF COURSE you’re taking a hiatus. Now. Just after I FINALLY got my hands on the first skein of crack. Er. Sweet Georgia yarn, I mean. Of course. The universe has a sense of humor, apparently.

But for travel? I was in India and Morocco in 1999 (before americans were the evilness), and that’s totally influenced the way I see color. If you’ve never been, GO. Go now! Screw the outstanding orders, just GO. Oh, but seriously.

  290. Sally says...

China, Mongolia, Nepal and Tibet to check out all their lovely natural yarns…

    Happy holidays!!!

  291. Wilena says...

Enjoy your much needed vacation. I hope you plan on visiting us in Atlantic Canada and enjoy our hospitality.

  292. hadley says...

I say Jakarta. I say it only because my inner voice is telling me to.

    Safe and happy travels!
