I’ll have the holidays, on the side

I’ve been avoiding holiday stuff in general these days. No tree this year, no sugar-loaded cookie baking, no crazed shopping excursions… I’m bypassing it all. Instead of gifts between friends this year, we are making donations to our favourite charities and foundations. For me, that will be the Maiwa Foundation and the Surfrider Foundation… We really don’t need anything except for our family and friends to be healthy and happy and to enjoy that with them. But I was more than tickled this morning when I found a photo from Meredith in my inbox:

Meredith’s new yarn…

She wrote:

Words cannot express… So I figured a picture would do. Just wanted to send a little thank you for making such beautiful yarn. I just received it today in the mail from Pick up Sticks here in Ontario and have been on pins and needles waiting for it!! I’m so excited it’s here!

I can’t wait until the holiday knitting is done because these two babies are for ME! Ha ha! Looks like I’m getting two pairs of luxurious socks for Christmas this year, huh? big grins

Thanks again, you do such beautiful work with yarns and dyes! All good things, Meredith

Well, I was downright touched. That’s all that I can hope for… that yarn, colours, and fibres bring you joy this holiday season.

Thank you, Meredith!

    Hello there,

I am trying to find someone in Vancouver who could knit something for me…it was in a store for $450, and I can’t afford that!

I don’t know that anything custom made would be any less expensive but your work is so incredibly delicate, I thought you would be perfect.

If you think you’d be interested in finding out more, please get in touch! Thank you…

Good for you about the holidays. I feel pretty much exactly the same way! It has turned into a real commercial world out there!

I’m very close to being that person who gives the card that say “I gave $X.XX to insert charity in your name.”

I give money anyway, I’m just really close to giving the money I’d spend on gifts as well…

My SweetGeoriga arrived last week, (Loopy Ewe) - I started the fondant socks today and hope to have them finished by Monday - as they need to be mailed by next Wednesday. (I love the feel and colour of your yarns - they never disappoint me)

We give to “Heifer” every year, this year we gave a Kinitting Basket, Bees, Rabbits, Chickens and part of an Arc. If you don’t know about Heifer, please check them out - it’s the gift that keeps on giving.

Meredith is right : u know how to make the colours of ur yarns full of light, and close to Nature’s inspiration. (oh oh I think what I would like to mean in french is hard to translate in english lol )

What a great idea for Christmas. I want to head in that direction, but my kids aren’t too happy with the idea. Perhaps in another couple of years or so. We have so much in this country, and there are so many in this world who have so little.

On the flip side, I do make at least one present a year. (depending upon my time)My husband has gotten into this habit as well. One of our daughters has always tried, but the other two kids don’t understand yet. I can see a couple of handknit shawls in the future for some of my giftees. (Including my SIL who lives in Vancouver.) Supporting the artist instead of Walmart appeals to me.

    All the best in 2007!

what do you think?
