Top 5 for 2006? No.

Vancouver received a most gorgeous snowfall this past weekend. Outside our house, the snow is still a thick layer of fluffy, clean white goodness. It’s made us eager to get up the mountain and go snowboarding… The cold outdoors makes this a perfect time to sit inside, snuggle under your handknit or handwoven blanket and reflect.

For the past two years, I’ve made this list of Top 5 for the year — here are 2005 and 2004. This year, I want to do something different. I have four questions here…

  1. How was 2006 for you?
  2. What was the highlight of your year?
  3. What did you want to accomplish that you didn’t get to?
  4. What are you planning for 2007?

I would love to hear your responses. They don’t have to be about knitting or spinning or weaving… we’re talking about you and all that comes with it — yarn or otherwise! Post me your answers in the comments by Friday, December 1 at midnight PST and I’ll randomly draw someone to receive yarn (2 skeins of Superwash Sock) or fibre (a 100g braid of BFL)… your pick.

2006-11-28_michelle.jpg
This is the single last handwoven item that Michelle Whipplinger owns. She states that she’s sold every item she’s ever woven except for this scarf. It’s a study of the use of yellow in 20/2 silk with block twill. Inspiring, much? I think so.
2006-11-30_swatches1.jpg
Inspired to become a better colourist, Michelle has us practice mixing our own chromatic neutral colours — those colours that you can’t necessarily call ‘red’ or ‘blue’ — those ‘in between’ colours. Deep, rich, magnetic and mysterious.
2006-11-30_swatches.jpg
Using watercolours to experiment with colours and colourways is quicker than mixing dyes. Once you become familiar with the behaviour of your watercolours and your dyes, you can transfer your knowledge to dyeing.

Over the past year, so many overwhelmingly challenging yet positive things happened to me that I couldn’t just reflect on my fibre-y activities. So here are my responses:

How was 2006 for you?

Productive. Passionate. Undeniably life-changing.

What was the highlight of your year?

Meeting Patrick Green and Paula Simmons? Yeah, that was awesome. Weaving on my own, beautiful floor loom? Yeah, also amazing. Having my handdyed yarns available at the newest local yarn shop, three bags full? Like a dream! And meeting the force of nature that is Michelle Whipplinger… also fantastic, but my highlight was…

…absolutely, positively the surf trip to Tofino this summer. There is no other experience in my life that has made me feel this strong and empowered… nothing like it. I don’t believe being a surfer has anything to do with your skill, your clothes, your gear, or even your attitude. I believe it has everything to do with being on the water, listening to the waves fall, feeling the relentless force of the ocean and then craving that same feeling every moment of your life. Even if it’s just spending a session bobbing in the saltwater… it’s worth it.

Spending those four days with close friends and away from the city really made me question the way we spend our time, our money, our resources. We, as in ‘Rich and I’, but also as in ‘our society’. That experience was quickly followed by a natural dye workshop at Maiwa where the owner, Charllotte, talked about dyeing in India without the need for external energy sources. It’s so hot there, the water is always warm and the sun cooks and sets the natural dyes. The concept of energy-free, synthetic-free dyeing is marinating with me now… actually lots of new thoughts are marinating with me now.

What did you want to accomplish that you didn’t get to?

Oh, I’ve been dying to finish my naturally-dyed, handspun and handwoven Gotland blanket. That is something I would love to see completed. To wrap myself in cochineal and logwood… like a hug from nature, itself. An option now to finish it quicker is to use a millspun warp that I just dye up so that I don’t have to spin all the yardage for both warp and weft… but somehow that feels like cutting corners. So, I’m determined to persevere and create every last inch of this blanket.

What are you planning for 2007?

Changes.

    4. What are you planning for 2007? To not accept or keep another job that I’m not suited for and will make me unhappy. To keep fibreing in any capacity!

How was 2006 for you? Busy and flew by quickly for the most part! What was the highlight of your year? Learning to spin!!! What did you want to accomplish that you didn’t get to? Well, I just had a lot of knitting projects on my to-do list that I never go around to, but that is par for the course :) What are you planning for 2007? Lots more sewing, and knitting and spinning. It looks like my school workload will be a little less than it has been so I really hope to make some progress on reducing my fabric, yarn, and fiber stash. (That way I have an excuse to just buy more)

    How was 2006 for you?

Fast. New job, new friends, new life in a lot of ways. I grew up, perhaps too quickly to realise, but can look back on it with a big fat smile. Oh, and I knitted a sweater, which certainly belongs up there with the other accolades.

What was the highlight of your year?

Going to Jamaica. An island that’s more than just a sum of its parts. It’s not the weed talking, I think I fell in love with the place.

What did you want to accomplish that you didn’t get to?

Lose that last 50lbs. Make my house tidy. Actually, scratch that last one. Creative people don’t need to be tidy. The endless stream of yarn, buttons, fabric, cameras and notions that spills between rooms is a testament of the wonderful things my boyfriend and I create.

What are you planning for 2007?

Ooodles of travel. And a tidier flat :)

    2. Highlight? Selling a piece of art at my first gallery opening. Starring as the lead in a community theatre production.

    3. Didn’t accomplish? Still working on that Manos sweater when sock projects don’t interfere!

    4. What’s ahead? A bigger, solo art show next summer.

    1. How was 2006 for you? This was not my favorite year, my husband traveled for about 4 months of it and some other personal issues had me down, however all that said life is wonderful and has been for several years now, I wouldn’t say it was a BAD year at all, but a frustrating last 6 months, at times.

    2. What was the highlight of your year? Meeting my SnB which I think was in the end of fall early summer, after several years of searching I now have a great group of women to knit and chat with, and now my good friend claudia to gab with.

I learned to spin in December of last year so this was my first year spinning and I am very proud of how much I have learned and accomplished. I love spinning.

    1. What did you want to accomplish that you didn’t get to?

Only one personal item, but I have decided it’s not important, with my husband travelining so much it wans’t really an option anyway, it will be when it’s meant to be!

    1. What are you planning for 2007?

Not pressuring myself about the personal item!! It’s consuming me to much. RELAXING mentally!

    Finish all my UFO sweaters.

Walking more, going to Australia and speaking at the webDU conference, going back home to VA for a week and spend time with my family in the summer.

Enjoying life and being thankful for all that I have, and spending stress free time with my husband.

    Cleaning the house more!

    :D

  12. Rebekkah says...

(This could be a little depressing.)

    1. How was 2006 for you? Terrible. I lost a parent and a job.

    2. What was the highlight of your year? The fact that I still have a roof over my head with the man I love, and that I’ve been able to focus a lot of my free time and energy on new creative pursuits. Maybe that’s a cheat, as it’s not an actual event, but I suppose that’s my highlight in terms of accomplishments and personal growth.

    3. What did you want to accomplish that you didn’t get to? There is always a long list of knitting projects that never make it. I put too many things on the wishlist, so it’s inevitable. But as my skills and knowledge grows, my knitting preferences change and grow, so I don’t consider this a bad thing. What one wants to accomplish on January 1 isn’t always what one wants to have accomplished when they look back on December 31. (Oh yeah, and if I really want to stick to my goals, I need to knit one measly intarsia swatch soon. Just to say I’ve done intarsia. That will nag me until I do it, even though most intarsia designs don’t appeal to me, anyway.)

    4. What are you planning for 2007? More writing, more designing, and knitting what makes me happy. If there is money, I want to begin to learn to spin and/or weave. (This is a big if.) In terms of the rest of life, stay active, keep the roof over my head, and make sure the people in my life know how much I love and appreciate them.

  13. Misty says...

    3. What did you want to accomplish that you didn’t get to? True Love. I’m still young, and still working on it.

    4. What are you planning for 2007? Figuring out a path for my life. I’ve been meandering for a couple years now. I think I need to lay down a road, even if I diverge greatly, at least I have something to steer me.

  14. Hanna says...

How was 2006? confusing and a bit frustrating. Highlight? Going to Israel with my family (before the war started) Undone Accomplishment? Blanket for my mom. I’ve only finished one of three panels. Plans for 2007? Finishing school!

    3) i wanted to have a job lined up before graduation. yea, that’s not happening.

    4) get a good, steady, well-paying job so that i can support my future husband who is a poor student, if interest rates ever drop i’d like to buy my own place (otherwise, i’d like to save money in order to buy within the next few years), knit wearable sweaters for both of my parents, learn how to be a good cook…i could go on…

    1. How was 2006 for you?

2006 was wonderful. I fell in love, for what I’m pretty sure is for good.

    1. What was the highlight of your year?

Taking a vacation to my guy’s hometown, Traverse City, MI. It was the most beautiful & peaceful vacation I’ve ever had. We took the best canoe trip, a trip that ended with me wading and standing with one leg in the freezing cold water of Lake Michigan and the other in the warm Platte River water.

    1. What did you want to accomplish that you didn’t get to?

Getting my apartment to be a liveable, soothing place for me- including my perfect knitting & spinning corner. It just didn’t happen. I’m living amongst boxes and trash bags of clothes that he can’t bear to part with- including acid washed jean jackets & a tuxedo from high school chorale. Nice.

    1. What are you planning for 2007?

The living space is to be what I want. I am going to be happier and more fulfilled in my job- which simply requires an attitude adjustment. I am going to attack all the knitting & spinning techniques that I’ve been dying to do, and that includes getting a wheel and finally making as many socks as I waaaaaaaaant instead of project after project that I’m not so excited about. Also, figuring out how to make paragraphs in blog comments. This is ridiculous.

How was 2006 ? (I just had this past weekend to attend a funeral – so I guess this influences my mood today)Not bad but this year came with lots of events, some sad (illnesses, operations, etc. on parents, and other sudden deaths) and some joyful (births, daughter’s fine realisations, etc..) My final conclusion this year: I am getting older… my mom and my in-laws too and the realisation that I will, one day, leave my daughter alone… Highlights knitting-wise: Apple Tree Blanket, a lot of baby knitting (fast and oh, so soft !!) a balm to my heart.. What I would have liked to accomplish but didn’t: hmmm too much stuff for that space: right now I am in the midst of learning how-to do my own sweater (raglan top-down) and I am frankly encountering lots of problems – but I keep at it.. so this project is still on the needles and my goal was to have it finished for the Xmas period… never mind !!! Planning for 2007: Anything in lace: another Birch, River, still looking to put my hand on a nice not too long lace scarf for Sea Silk (Fleece Artist).

How has 2006 been? Very busy, with lots of ups and downs.

The highlight? Fiberly: buying a wheel. Non-fiberly: presenting my research at a conference.

What I planned but didn’t get to? It looks like I won’t have published a paper this year, and there’s no chance of knitting a sweater from my handspun.

For next year? Getting published and at least starting a roving-to-sweater project.

What I’d like to accomplish, but didn’t- learning to sew, knitting a lace shawl.

For 2007?- sewing and the shawl (they may be here in ‘08) Use my stash!

Even though the year isn’t over again … we still have a whole month to go … but I’m going to attempt to answer and perhaps update once the year is over.

    How was 2006 for you?

2006 has been a year of constant change and ups and downs. A change of job, a failed marriage, separation with no hope of reuniting, family member dying, family members sick, purchase of a new home, a wonderful child, a fantastic yarn store to hang out in, spinning, knitting. It hasn’t been the best of years, but it has taught me that I am strong. I am ok. I don’t need anyone. That even on the worst day, all I need to do is look at my son and I smile.

What was the highlight of your year?

    Buying my house.

What did you want to accomplish that you didn’t get to?

    my 2006 knitting list!

  30. Nina says...
    1. How was 2006 for you? 2006 was definitely the most emotional year of my life.. I learned a lot about my family and myself and how our relationships work.. some members of my family I feel even closer to while others I couldn’t feel further a part from. We decided that we do want to have a baby, we started looking at houses to buy, and I think I feel even closer to my husband now than when we got married — and I didn’t think that was even possible.

    2. What was the highlight of your year? I would have to say.. our 1 year anniversary was probably the best part of 2006. We spent it in NY, which neither one of us had ever been to before, and I learned things about myself and my husband this year that I never knew existed, I over came a little of my fear of heights, and I managed to lose 78 pounds.

    3. What did you want to accomplish that you didn’t get to? I really wish I had gotten more projects finished this year.. It wasn’t really a project productive year and I missed that. I would like to have gotten a sweater for myself finished this year.. I have found a pattern or two I would like to start.. so perhaps after the holidays I can get to it. I am loving the patterns in both Interweave’s Summer issue and Vogue Knitting’s winter issue. I would like to make a few things from each book.. I wish I had gotten around to it sooner :(

    4. What are you planning for 2007? I am planning on knitting a bunch of baby items for fellow doll collectors, I am wanting to complete some of the projects for myself that I mentioned above, and I would like to make something for a friend or two. I would love to start with the Maternity sweater from Interweave.. I have a feeling when I do get pregnant, I will want to knit lots of baby things, not a maternity sweater for myself.. so I had better get started soon!

    1. How was 2006 for you? – Busy. My husband and youngest daughter both had accidents that left me extremely busy playing caretaker/nurse/maid, but it also brought us all closer.
    2. What was the highlight of your year? – getting my kitchen renovated after waiting a decade!
    3. What did you want to accomplish that you didn’t get to? More knitting for myself.
    4. What are you planning for 2007? To get back into sewing and quilting again. To relax more and just let life take me where it will!
  32. Christy says...

How was 2006 for you? Crazy. So crazy to think it was just yesterday I was worrying about 2006, and now I worry about 2007. I worry because in 2007, I start that new journey. I’ll have my credential and start teaching.

What was the highlight of your year? The family trip of a total of 12 of us to Italy. It was amazing. I met cousins I didn’t know I had and found patience in myself that I didn’t think existed (Well, when traveling with 8 other women and 3 men, you gotta find some, right?)

What did you want to accomplish that you didn’t get to? Get that certain guy to plant his lips on mine. Heh. I’m still working on it.

What are you planning for 2007? Haha, besides that kiss? Teaching high school english in my own classroom, learning to spin, and knitting my first sweater.

i wanted to spin. it’s been so long that i’ve forgotten the basics.

4.What are you planning for 2007?

i’m planning even bigger changes … life , love & happiness!

  34. Heather says...
    1. 2006 was difficult. I had to resettle in the US. I have been fighting suburbia while not having an exit. But it has also been restful.

    2. The highlight was travel – to my friend’s wedding on Cape Cod, to Turkey for vacation, to Congo for work.

    3. I wanted to publish some patterns and save some money for a car, but there’s always next year!

    4. For 2007, I am planning to consolidate more in my interests and career moves, learn more outside my field and focus on what really interests me, and see whether I am prepared to move overseas again. Also, stash reduction…

  35. elizabeth says...
    1. How was 2006 for you? 2006 was a year of change and adaptation for me. It was a somewhat difficult year, but I feel that I’ll be starting 2007 in a better place than I did 2006.

    2. What was the highlight of your year? Coming home to my new husband every day.

How was 2006 for you? -I think it was pretty fabulous. Got through my first year of marriage perfectly, and I’m on my way to graduating college early next year.

What was the highlight of your year? -Getting approved for a mortgage! Now we just need to find the right house… I think a bigger highlight will be around Christmas time when we roadtrip to Graceland, and I can see my sister for the first time in half a year.

What did you want to accomplish that you didn’t get to? - I started knitting this year, starting out with socks on DPN’s (I’m a sucker for punishment). I wanted to finish a sweater by the end of November, but I broke a finger a few days ago and will be out of commission till 2007. Boo.

What are you planning for 2007? -A lot. Graduation. Driving across country to see the West (which has been my dream since I was in middle school). Yes, I’ve been saving up student loans for this, and the debt will be totally worth it. Finding my first ‘real’ job. Buying a house. Maybe starting plans for a baby.

  37. Heather says...

How was 2006 for you? Lots of ups and downs, more extreme than most years, settling down towards the end of the year. What was the highlight of your year? Producing Swap-o-rama-rama. What was the highlight of your year? Starting my own blog, so I can inspire others, instead of just being inspired BY others.

What did you want to accomplish that you didn’t get to? To purchase a house and stop living where I do (it’s not the greatest of places)

What did you want to accomplish that you didn’t get to? Financial goals, but because of question #1, it’s okay!

What are you planning for 2007? Baby #3!!! I am 6 weeks pregnant! Yeah!

  40. Jenn says...

2006 was a good year for me – one of the best. The highlight of my year would have to be getting a job in my chosen field where I actually use one of my degrees! The few things I wanted to accomplish and didn’t get to are mostly knitting related – more fair isle/stranded knitting and learning intarsia. For 2007 I’m planning on remodeling my house, learning more about my new career and working to do the best job I can at it, and spending lots of time knitting!

  41. Laurie says...

2006 was problematic. A good part of the year was wiped out of my life when my husband broke his leg and was out for the count for five months.

The highlight? When he didn’t need additional surgery to heal the breaks.

I wanted to accomplish more of my to do lists: both obligatory and pleasurable. Didn’t get to do a great deal of either for a stretch.

Planning joy for 2007, and finding out what shape that takes.

How was 2006? It was good mostly with some bad hard parts but over all a good year. The hignlight was our family trip to Disney. What did I want to accomplish but didn’t. I wanted to do so much more but…. I need to make smaller goals that I can accomplish. What are you planning for 2007? A wool pullover in my own design. More yoga and designing yoga dolls.

    3. What did you want to accomplish that you didn’t get to? 2 chapters on my dissertation…

    4. What are you planning for 2007? 2 more chapters on the dissertation!

That first item there is really beautiful!

I reckon I could answer some questions, too. :) I feel kinda bad not finding out what’s been happening in your blog lately (school has been crazy) before going on about my own stuff, but here goes…

    1. How was 2006 for you?

Crazy. Rough. Full of (mostly) good changes that were born out of a lot of turmoil, probably with more of both to come!

    1. What was the highlight of your year?

Living in a house that allowed me to be closer to the wild than I’d ever been before, and being able to escape from it to a safe (so far :) ) place once my crazy landlord there made things weird.

    1. What did you want to accomplish that you didn’t get to?

Never did finish those sweaters, or those film essays, or even that first pair of toe-up socks.

    1. What are you planning for 2007?

Graduation from library school, I hope, and the acquisition of a kickass job in the field. Perhaps simultaneously a new beginning in a writing or art career? I wouldn’t mind getting a really good korma recipe down pat, either.

  47. Jennifer Pasch says...

How was 2006 for you? Great! I’m graduating college December 21st.

Sadly, the highlight of the year is also my pending graduation! (Perhaps its not that sad…)

What did you want to accomplish? I REALLY wanted to take a spinning class at my LYS, but I was 1st on the waitlist for an 8 person class so it didn’t happen.

What am I planning for 2007? Taking that spinning class of course!! And moving on to the next phase of my life… The first time since I was 4 that I haven’t been in school!

  48. chris says...
    1. 2006 has been a good year for me – got to re-connect with some school chums whom I haven’t spoken to in years.

    2. I’ve got to say that my highlight of the year was just “dropping everything” and heading to Europe for a little trip. It was a big step for me because I’d never been overseas all by myself. I also learnt that despite language barriers, people do understand each other.

    3. I had big plans to knit a shawl but chickened out at the last moment. The thought of blocking a shawl scares me but blocking pieces for a sweater doesn’t. Go figure. :)

    4. As for 2007? I have big plans to backpack across Asia for a couple of months – just need to work out a couple more details.

  49. Danielle says...
    1. How was 2006 for you? Good, exceiting, life changing.

    2. What was the highlight of your year? Moving to LA was the first one. There was so much to take in, but the best part was when my hubby and I drove up to San Luis Obispo. The colors, and lifestyle were wonderful. The second one, the one that’s been the most exciting was when we moved to Australia a couple of months ago. It was a whirlwind move that I never thought I would do, but am turning out to really enjoy.

    3. What did you want to accomplish that you didn’t get to? I wanted to finish my first sweater, which I still might, but my time has been rather limited this year.

    4. What are you planning for 2007? School, a possible company launch, a more organized life in general. Oh yeah, and not moving. That’s something I’m looking foward to more than anything else. My hubby and I have moved multiple times in the past 3 years. It’s time to settle in.

  50. Amy says...
    1. How was 2006 for you?

Mostly bad. I lost my job, my father-in-law, and a baby to miscarriage. I’m looking forward to better things (including a new job) in 2007.

    1. What was the highlight of your year?

Taking our 3-year-old daugher to Maine for the week. We could never have afforded to do it ourselves, so we’re grateful my MIL helped us out.

    1. What did you want to accomplish that you didn’t get to?

    Find a job.

    1. What are you planning for 2007?

A bigger cabling project, more lacework, and finding a job. Also getting pregnant again. That’s my big project. :)

  51. Emily S. says...
    1. This year was pretty stable. It wasn’t great, but it wasn’t anywhere near as volatile as 2005 – I’m starting to get really good as managing my bipolar disorder.

I was kind of lonely, but deep down I know it’s better to be single than to be with the wrong guy. Besides, my cat is great company.

    1. This summer was pretty great. I did not use air conditioning (it was an experiment in using less energy) and I saved tons of money and didn’t really mind it that much. Another highlight was my birthday a couple of weeks ago. My parents were generous, and I got some great stuff.

    2. I didn’t do much knitting. I mean, I did a project here and there, but I could have done a lot more.

    3. Next year,I want to get away. I’ll probably take a little weekend trip in January. But I’m really looking forward to a trip to Italy next fall.

On a larger scale, the most important goal I have is to come as close as I can to finishing my undergraduate work so I can move on to bigger and better things.

  52. debbie says...

1.how was 2006 for me? very quiet, and relaxing! a bit frustrating at times – i felt my energy being drained at times, but all in all quite nice. 2.what was the highlight of my year? i think having my children home and seeing their accomplishments – my youngest graduating from high school, my oldest receiving her masters degree, and having my son home all summer after a semester of college and a two year church mission. 3.what did you want to accomplish that you didn’t get to? i wish i devoted more time to sewing, wish i devoted more time to practice with spindling, wish i could’ve persuaded my husband to do a stop-over to san francisco on our way home from utah this april. 4.what am i planning for 2007? try to eat healthier and listen to my body, read more, and journaling (handwriting); i actually want to continue what i’ve been doing in my craft, but grow more….

  54. Brittany says...
    1. How was 2006 for you? I wouldn’t change a thing.

    2. What was the highlight of your year? The move to China was great but the best thing was my engagement. Nothing like moving 9000 km away to kick a reluctant significant other’s butt into gear.

    3. What did you want to accomplish that you didn’t get to? I had urges to learn to weave and dye but wasn’t able to really delve into that. However I don’t think I would change the year I’ve had just to fit that in.

    4. What are you planning for 2007? I’m looking forward to coming back home and getting back to things I love there. Being with the SO, spinning, etc.

  55. Melissa says...

How was 2006 for you? A time of restoring and healing! What was the highlight of your year? Traveling overseas to help those in need with a group of amazing people. What did you want to accomplish that you didn’t get to? Spend more quiet time, give up time wasted ex. TV What are you planning for 2007? Clarify and focus on my strengths, getting towards the end of school!

  56. Danielle says...
    1. How was 2006 for you? Good, exciting, life changing.

    2. What was the highligh of your year? First moving to LA, and taking a trip up the coast to San Luis Obispo. I would love to move there sometime, it was so relaxing, and yet had a bunch of the things that usually only big cities offer. The second thing, and the most exciting has been our whirl wind move to Australia. I never would have thought that I’d be living here, but now that I am, it’s growing on me.

    3. What did you want to accomplish that you didn’t get to? I wanted to finish an adult size sweater, and I still might. My time this past year for ‘me’ knitting has been very limited.

    4. What are you planning for 2007? School, possibly launching a company, and being a selfish knitter for once. Oh yeah, and not moving. That’s the biggest thing for 2007. My hubby and I have moved multiple times each of the last 3 years, so it’ll be nice to finally have the chance to settle in.

  57. Erin says...

How was 2006 for you? One of the worst years of my life, emotionally. Got dumped, had to move to my own apartment, parents divorcing, Mom leaving Seattle. I’ll be glad when it’s over.

What was the highlight of your year? My trip to Paris and London.

What did you want to accomplish that you didn’t get to? Open an Etsy store. Learn how to sew.

What are you planning for 2007? Getting a new spinning wheel, learn to sew, open an etsy store.

  58. Jeanne says...
    1. How was 2006 for you?

Unimaginably terrible. Dad became ill in December 2005 and rode that rollercoaster until June 7th, when he died at age 88. Mom was diagnosed with cancer in July, and died September 30th at age 86. I was their primary caregiver and they were my best friends. That about sums it up.

    1. What was the highlight of your year?

Rediscovering my long-dormant fiber fetish. Since I couldn’t get out to the barn to ride my horses much (stress reliever), I needed an outlet that I could take with me or do at home while watching my parents. I dug out my knitting needles, refreshed my memory, and now I’m not only blogging and knitting, but I got back into weaving. My Christmas gift to myself this year will be a 45″ 8-shaft Harrisville loom.

    1. What did you want to accomplish that you didn’t get to?

A college course in Entrepreneurship (scheduled, dropped out when Dad got sick); a six-week course at the Parelli Center in Ocala with my horse (scheduled, had to cancel); trail rides every weekend (just didn’t happen as I was on 24/7 call with the parents).

    1. What are you planning for 2007?

I have no idea. Everything changed so dramatically when my parents died. I’m in the process of cleaning out two of three houses, putting at least one up for sale, figuring out which one if any I want to live in (one is mine, one is my parents’, and one is my grandma’s house that was rented out and is in sorry shape), and trying to decide what to do for a living. I’ve been unemployed since 2002 (unless you count occasional freelance and being a casual student) after discovering I love doing graphic design, I just don’t like doing it for a living. Maybe grad school. I always wanted to get a Masters and PhD… always wanted an MFA… Textiles, perhaps? Learn to spin, learn to draft 8-shaft patterns, learn to design my own sweaters, learn Tunisian Crochet. Maybe I’ll take that Entrepreneurship course. Maybe I’ll make it to Ocala with my horse. Maybe I’ll go on more than three trail rides.

    Oh, I know.

    Win the lottery.

  59. Annie says...

Hopefully more knitting, and learning new techniques, sewing, hopefully a vacation, which we haven’t had in 4 years, making my yard beautiful with flowers this summer which we couldn’t afford last year.

  60. Ana says...
    1. How was 2006 for you? The most difficult year of my life actually. I was in my final year at University andf ell very ill at the second term. I still got 2:1 at the end despite the fact I’ve missed all my lectures and labs. I was going for the 1st but even 2:1 makes me very happy. On the other hand I’ve re-discovered knitting for the second time of my life!!!
    2. What was the highlight of your year? Graduation!!! It was fantastic such a huge sense of relieve at the end of three years of hard work. Moving back to Cambridge, starting MSc and doing the Microarray lab for the past two weeks!

    4. What are you planning for 2007? Loads of knits, finishing MSc and starting PhD… I don’t know what else. I guess if I get the PhD place of my dreams I might start taking private piano lessons or going back to ball dancing.
  61. Mintyfresh says...
    1. How was 2006 for you? Pretty bad. Despite good knitting accomplishments, my work life was bad and my boyfriend of 10.5 years and I just broke up (last Sunday; still nursing my wound). So–in a word, Bad.
    2. What was the highlight of your year? Getting my new job. I applied on something of a whim, thinking it was sort of a reach (though everyone told me it was in the bag), and I got it within 3 weeks. There’s a boost of confidence!
    3. What did you want to accomplish that you didn’t get to? I still have plenty of sleeveless sweaters lingering about. I’m not sure what, in my life, I’d like to accomplish but didn’t.

    2. What was the highlight of your year? Learned to spin from an excellent teacher, Jane Hyland. One of the most peaceful, relaxing days at MS&W. Handled the damage from a basement flood by myself, not fun, but I did it.

    4. What are you planning for 2007? Continuing forward with house projects.

But before we left we bought our farm that we had been searching for for months. I wished I had been able to improve my health situation, that has not happened. Also to finish my knitting projects WIP! In 2007 I hope to get an etsy shop going and enjoy better health

Amazing, wonderful, challenging. Probably the best year of my life so far.

    1. What was the highlight of your year?

I got promoted, and as a result went to NYC for the first time. I’m learning to design quilting fabric, as well as doing my usual graphic design, which is quite challenging.

I also designed my first sweater.

But hands-down the highlight of my year was being proposed to on a mountain top by a man who makes me finally understand what everybody meant when they talked about “love”.

    1. What did you want to accomplish that you didn’t get to?

Surprisingly enough, I can’t think of anything. Either I didn’t set myself very high challenges or a forgot the ones that I didn’t accomplish! I still haven’t finished an afghan for my sister, but 2006 isn’t over yet…

    1. How was 2006 for you? – Interesting and BUSY. I got very involved with my hospital’s Ireland Cancer Center, started a “caring caps” program collecting knit/crochet caps for chemo patients, I looked into changing jobs and was THIS close when my HUSBAND found a new job in a different state! 4. What are you planning for 2007? Meeting new friends, finding new areas to explore in our new city/state, getting our new house organized (I am NOT an organized person – but this is a fresh start right?) and all those wonderful things that come with moving to a completely different area and having a ‘fresh start’.

How was 2006 for you: - Traumatic, tragic, but full of growth and “newness of life”. My husband and sister went through a life-saving kidney transplant (she donated to him), my friend’s son committed suicide. I also discovered belly dance (at last – an art form I can get behind) and made huge strides in knitting.

What was the highlight of your year? - Seeing my husband’s family touched by how much love my sister had, that she wanted to donate a kidney to Ian. It was a horrible and stressful time, but she just shone, even through all that pain.

What did you not accomplish? - Never did manage to get to the gym 3X a week. On the upside, I spent a lot more time focussing on my little daughters, so I figure we have come out on top – fitness be damned. Besides, there’s all that belly dancing to consider – I’m not really missing the weight room that much.

What are you planning for 2007? - I am utterly determined to pay three long-overdue family visits. It will cost a mint of money to take all of us across the continent twice, and deep into BC’s north country, but family is more important than money.

How was 2006 for you? Super Excellent overall! Very challenging especially transitioning back to work full-time after completing my Masters in International Law and holding it out with a few challenging jobs at the same time, Newswriting and practicing Law and still trying to fit time and passion for fiber! before finally deciding to go back to work full time as an International News Correspondent.

What was the highlight of your year? Getting involved with big news events like supporting the news industry during Kim Jong Il’s ill-fated nuclear tests and travelling to Tel Aviv to write about the Israel-Lebanon war and then still getting flight stops to Belgium and Japan for fresh fiber and yarns!Subsequently moving my fiber inventory online and getting a reliable staff to manage it to benefit the unfortunate I meet in my professional career.

What did you want to accomplish that you didn’t get to? Crap shoot! weaving more and spinning more on my new Scandinavian loom and my newly acquired Magnus Drudik Travelling wheel! alas, the loom has become an artefact in my studio between all my travelling. Had to abandon handknitting for a while due to a wrist injury on a snow-skiing trip in South Korea.

What are you planning for 2007? Moving to a new place and endless possibilities on my new fiber business venture. success in my professional career and finally getting my Masters Thesis formally honored at that Grand ceremony amongst my compatriots after all the challenges for the last 3 years, juggling motherhood, school and fiber entrepreneurship.

How was 2006 for you? 2006 was all about adapting, changing my perspective and finding a new way to examine everything in my life.

What was the highlight of your year? The highlight is very personal, but very monumnetal to me: I had some very startling realizations, came to some understandings and shed some baggage.

What did you want to accomplish that you didn’t get to? This may seem shallow given my previous answers: I wish we’d gotten more done on the house and that I had learned to cable. I am disappointed that the house isn’t on the market and I don’t have a cabled hat.

What are you planning for 2007? Changes. Growth. Knowledge.

How was 2006 for me? Wonderful! I finished my first year of college and started my second. I’ve made really great new friends, and I’ve decided to study abroad for a sememster next year in Spain. In my classes, I’ve been learning such a lot – college has really helped me develop my analytical skills.

The highlight of my year? Getting chosen by my college to go to a leadership conference in NYC. I’d never been there before and it was so much fun! The college paid for everything, too, so I ate and ate.

I promised myself that I would stop procrastinating this year, but that didn’t happen. I haven’t finished a single paper early! However, none of them have been late, which is a good thing.

Next year, next year I will stop my procrastination. And I will go to Spain, improve my Spanish, and have SO MUCH FUN. Then when I come back I’ll start my junior year of college with my friends.

2006 was a fantastic year, way trumping the year before. the year before I was in an abusive relationship, mentally all screwed up, and desperately unhappy. 2006 I have been in a fantastic relationship with the love of my life, got a great new art studio, started spinning for crown mountain farms, and have in general been super happy. For 2007 I’m planning to try to work more on making a living from my art, both fine art wise, craft wise, and fiber wise, and basically work towards living the life I want. Your blog has been an incredible inspiration for me, as well as you yourself, and I look forward to 2007!

How was 2006 for you? Difficult, at times. But I wouldn’t change a thing.

What was the highlight of your year? Moving back home to Vancouver Island, after almost six years on the Lower Mainland. I love big city life. But the Island is, and always has been, my home. The salty sea air is in my blood. I feel like “me” again.

What did you want to accomplish that you didn’t get to? I am so proud to be able to say: I accomplished everything I’d hoped to and more. This is a new, and somewhat alien, experience for me. Can you tell that I’m smiling? :-)

This fall, I landed a great job, moved to a new city, and challenged myself by learning some new knitting techniques (cables, dpn’s, and knitting with circular needles). I also made my very first sweater.

    2. The birth of our third child.
    3. Get the house organized before the birth (that darn nesting reflex).
    4. Perhaps getting the house organized wouldn’t be a bad idea. Actually, I’d rather get moved into our new house (which isn’t finished quite yet), though – you know, just move away from all the disorganized mess. Oh, if only it worked that way.

    1. 2006 was a year of mental transition, looking at things in new ways.
    2. The highlights of my year were starting my blog, finishing a 5-year knitting project, and doing a 40-mile charity bike ride. Also buying my dream car.
    3. We had hoped to sell our house and move, but couldn’t find a buyer. I didn’t read as many books as I had hoped to, and I didn’t finish my pink camisole, which is a challenging pattern for me because of gauge. 4.In 2007, we’ll put our house up for sale again and try to move to a house that better suits our needs. I want to start training to ride a century (100 miles) and join a cycling club. I definitely want to knit and read more, and my long-term goal is to find a job that I love.

How was 2006 for you? It was a year of adjustments: adjusting to a new part of the country, staying home full time with my son, and meeting new people.

What was the highlight of your year? Visiting New York and San Francisco. We hadn’t been to New York in a few years, and I really wanted to get back “home” to San Francisco after being gone for a year.

What did you want to accomplish that you didn’t get to? I wanted to do more gardening — build raised beds, do something about the lawn in the back yard, plant more flowers.

What are you planning for 2007? See above. We’ve bought the wood for the raised beds, so we’re on our way. I’d also like to refresh my Chinese language skills, and start selling some of my stuff in craft fairs.

How was 2006 for you? Lots of really big changes, it started up rough, but ended up pretty good.

What was the highlight of your year? Having my boyfriend move in and not be a disaster. What did you want to accomplish that you didn’t get to? Finish knitting my first sweater. What are you planning for 2007? KNit more sweaters!! And determine if I want to stay in my job.

    1. How was 2006 for you? Absolutely wonderful on many many aspects, but pretty bad health-wise… and I’m apparently not yet done with it.
    2. What was the highlight of your year? Getting the opportunity to invent a great freelancing job to serve the needs of the storyteller/writer who is the love of my life. Having him with me in all the good and the bad times. Deciding to take up spinning and really getting at it instead of just dreaming of it (I’ve just received my first spindle, and some fibers are coming my way!).
    3. What did you want to accomplish that you didn’t get to? I didn’t get to sell my house and buy the one we had chosen together for lack of a buyer. And so many other things…
    4. What are you planning for 2007? Trying to be less in a passive mode and more in an active mode. (That would help accomplishing many of things left unaccomplished in 2006!). And I’ll continue to be looking for my true calling… maybe I’ll find it through spinning? ‘Cause I definitely hear it calling my name…
  115. Eva says...
    1. How was 2006 for you? Pretty freakin’ awesome!

    2. What was the highlight of your year? Finishing a 150-page thesis on homegrown European terrorism. Graduating from college with a BA in Political Science. Landing a job in research in my field. Landing a job at the super-cool knitting cafe nearby. Finding a rocking apartment after our housemate got too sketchy to live with.

    3. What did you want to accomplish that you didn’t get to? I would have loved to win the Watson Fellowship and spend 12 months traveling to knitting communities across Europe. I sometimes feel if I had worked just a little harder to plan my project and convey it to the interviewer, I might have gotten the award. But I’m enjoying my life too much to dwell on (probably unwarranted) regrets.

    4. What are you planning for 2007? Great things. Graduate school in Europe or Montreal, a knitting blog that actually gets updated, maybe writing up some of my patterns finally.

what do you think?
