cameraphone malfunction
Okay. So the Sam Roberts/BSS/The Stills/Jets Overhead concert at Deer Lake Park yesterday was amazing. The weather was a perfect 25 degrees and sunny. Like Venus said, Sam Roberts live — amazing. Broken Social Scene live — also amazing. The fact that I didn’t get a sunburn or tan lines after spending six hours in the sun — very amazing.
Michelle, Lindsey and I found our way to the very front of the crowd and I swear I was not even ten feet from Sam Roberts — close enough to see those sparkly blue eyes… Like every other 14-year-old girl in the crowd, I went to get my cameraphone but discovered that I had spilled water in my bag and on my phone! The screen was all fogged up from the moisture and wouldn’t turn on anymore! Gahhhhhh. I completely fried my new-not-even-a-month-old cell phone… and at such an inopportune time.
Has anybody else ever soaked their cell phone and had it survive? Please, I need hope. =)

I’m usually a lurker, but I wanted to tell you to have hope….I had my cell phone absolutely swamped when we got caught in a storm out on the lake, it fell to the bottom of the boat where the rain (and I mean torrential believe me) pelted it for about an hour. It took about two days to dry out completely, I had to take the battery out and lay the whole thing in a sunny window, but now it is as good as new. So hang in there and cross your fingers.

take hope! my brother’s phone (a rzr)went through the wash. he let it dry out for a long period of time, about a week…in the meantime, he bought a new phone. as luck would have it, he now has two phones that work!
The same thing happened to me a few weeks ago. A water bottle leaked in my bag and my phone got soaked. When I opened it up, the battery was all wet, and I could see water and condensation in the screen. I opened it all up, took the battery out etc., and left it in front of a fan all night. The next morning it still wouldn’t work. I left it another night, and the next morning it switched on fine. The only bummer is now that the camera no longer works. Hmm, maybe this isn’t the reassuring story you were looking for?
I’m sorry to tell you that I washed my sons phone in the washing machine and it did not survive. My other son was thrown in a pool with his phone in his pocket and his did not survive either. They don’t do well in water!
My girl put my hubby’s phone in the toilet. He unscrewed the phone carefully and left all the seperate bits to air out for about a week. It seems to work now…It’s worth a shot anyway!
I have washed my son’s cellphone in the washer. We discovered it when he started searching for it after a good long wash and several rinses. Hubby took it in pieces and dried it partially with a hairdrier set on cold, then we let it dry for a day or two in pieces. It has worked for almost three years after the incident, without any troubles. Saltwater is poison to cellphones. Hubby dropped his in the sea (and we don’t have very high salt levels here outside Finland) and it died an instant death.
I, um, once dropped mine into the toilet. I took the battery out right away and let it all dry out and it was none the worse for it.
ps Just so you know, I was not talking and using the facilities simultaneously, it fell out of my pocket and well …
I’ll second Tani’s message of hope. I put my husband’s cell phone through the wash and after a very sheepish confession, much apologizing and a few days of drying it was as good as new - and very clean!
Many years ago, I was in the airport late at night to fly home & decided I should “potty” before boarding the plane. Since I was returning from a business trip & always needed my phone handy, it happened to be clipped to the belt on my pants. When I entered the bathroom stall & pulled down my pants, I forgot my cell phone was still attached to them & it fell…plop…right into the toilet. Thank goodness it was all clear water! I fished the darn thing out & of course it wouldn’t turn on.
Thinking all was lost, I turned off my phone, boarded the plane & went home. The next morning, I rehearsed in my mind what I was going to tell the company IT guy that handled the cell phone accounts. I picked up my phone for inspiration, noticed that the screen didn’t look foggy anymore & I turned it on…..IT WORKED!
I had that cell phone for 2 more years! GOOD LUCK!
My Father fell into his swimming pool with his phone in his top pocket. He got out, got changed, took it apart and dried it off and amazingly it worked just fine:-) My son on the other hand dropped hiss very expensive phone in a puddle and it expired on the spot, so fingers crossed
I soaked mine once. It began to work again as it dried. Of course, I used this as an excuse to get a new one….
One of the teenagers I coach ran her phone through the wash. Her mom resurrected it — she put it in a tupperware box with several packages of dessicant (you know, like they put in shoeboxes …). That pulled the moisture out of the phone and it worked fine after that. Good luck!
My friend dropped hers in the ocean (near shore) and let it dry for a few days…it worked! Hope yours works again soon!
I dropped my rzr in the toilet bowl (after I flush it!) and I took off the battery and let it dry for about a day. It worked fine after that but I couldn’t charge it. It’s a good thing that it’s still under warranty, so I got a replacement. I hope your phone is saved!
Long time lurker.
I, too, put my husbands cell phone through the washing machine. Once I found it we took out the battery, placed it in the sun to dry, left it for about two days, and voila! Works just fine!
This happened more than a year ago, and he’s still using the same phone! I hope the same will be true for yours.
My old cell phone got wet in my gym bag - water bottle leaked all over it. Tried drying it out. No dice. Bought a new one. Sigh.
I washed Matt’s cell phone (sweartaghad I checked the pockets, oh well). After it dried out, I called up my service provider and explained that it had suddenly stopped working, and would they please replace it? Got a free swap the next week.
I think Dylan Stiles talked about putting his in a vacuum chamber, it was successfully resurrected. You might try a low-temp oven (turn it on to 200 F for abour 2 minutes, then shut it off) for a few hours?
I have the same advice. Let it dry out. I think I used a hair dryer on mine after I dropped it in the toilet. Unfortunately, one thing you’re supposed to not do is turn it on, but that’s kind of a knee-jerk reaction.
My friend has dropped her phone in her pool twice. Her dad stuck it in the oven on low heat for about 15 minutes. Be careful and watch the phone, but warming it up in dry heat should help.
My phone is a survivor. It has seen more water and rain that I’d care to admit, along with several (unintentional) jumps from the top of the stairs. It always survives.
Take the battery out of the phone and let it dry compeltely - at least 3 or 4 days. Longer if need be.
My daughter has dropped her phone in the spa 3 times and it works fine. She also drops it on the floor with regularity.
I have washed my son’s phone. Twice. The first time it fared much better. I took the battery out and put it in the sun and let it dry for days. Probably 3-4 days. If you do not turn it on until it is all dried out it will be fine. Or hopefully. The second time, the screen never came back but the phone worked. Dry is the key. Good luck!
!!!!!!!!!!! I am so glad you had such a good time! My Fella’s sister went to and she had a blast. She wasn’t fortunate enough to be as close as you were though. It’s too bad about your phone. I’ve heard of people taking their phone apart and letting it dry out. Don’t know if it will work but it’s worth a shot!
I droped mine in a mop bucket filled with water and Mr. Clean, I took the battery off and let them both dry out for a day or two and 3 years later it still works. good luck!
I have sent my or my husband’s phone through the washer several times, just leave it open, take the back off, and remove the card so it will dry quicker, and in about 2 days or so, you can turn it right back on, and the window will un-fog too! Least ours did, hope it works for you
yep, dropped my phone in the pedicure water…doesn’t that sound pretentious? Let it dry out completely, with the battery removed.
Say, when are you going to dye again? My credit card is cooling off! lol!
I know of three different phones that have been dropped in the toilet (yes, one was by me). None survived the trauma. They had some initial signs of life but after a few days it was obvious that we had to shut off life support and deal with the loss. Sorry.
Felicia, I have gotten my phone wet a few times and found the best way to dry it out is to take out the battery (like others have said). I put mine opened up (it’s a flip phone) on the dashboard of my car parked in the sun. I live in Colorado where it is almost always sunny and the dry heat usually dries it up quickly.
What is the most important step in spinning a uniform yarn? Pre-drafting?
Here’s a link to oven drying with some comments below for you: http://www.lifehack.org/articles/lifehack/revive-a-submerged-cell-phone.html
Don’t lose hope. Do you have insurance on this new toy? I know some US cell phone companies offer insurance on their phones for a few dollars a month. My 2 year old phone is insured. I was very happy to have the hinge replaced for free when it broke, and in-store same day service, too. This was only a month ago and I could have bought a new phone with what I paid for insurance, but new phones are such a hassle.
If your phone is less than a month old, you might try just exchanging it for a new phone. Some plans will let you do that as long as it’s within the month. Good luck!
My sister had a phone that survived both a washing machine incident and a dunk in a pond. It may have something to do witht he fact I used to work tech support for a cell phone company, and I took it all apart, let all the components dry out, and reassembled it. Most of the time, that works, but it depends on how wterlogged the phone is. I wish you lots of luck!
And also? That Kill Bill colorway is amazing. Please, please, please let me know if you’ll be putting any up for sale in the Sweet Shop, I’d love to get some….my fiance and I are huge Tarantino fans and one of our first dates was to see Kill Bill, and I’d love to make some socks for sentimental reasons.
