explorTAIWANESE
Did you know that May is not only “eat local” month, but it’s also “Asian Heritage Month” in Canada? explorASIAN 2006 is a month-long celebration of Asian Canadian arts and culture in the Lower Mainland. Chisako’s “Kasuri” weaving show that I mentioned a few days ago is part of the explorASIAN event schedule. My father, Shyh-Charng Lo, is participating in a joint exhibition called “explorTAIWANESE”, opening at the Roundhouse Community Centre in Yaletown next Tuesday, May 23.
Here are all the details…
Roundhouse Community Centre 181 Roundhouse Mews, Vancouver May 23 - June 3, 2006, 9:30 am - 9:30 pm
Explore the work of Fu-chin Hu, a Taiwanese traveler, and Shyh-Charng Lo, a Taiwanese Vancouverite shown together in this exquisite joint art exhibition.
Come and see their beautiful interpretations of Vancouver scenery expressed through oil paintings. Get insight into the artists’ inspirations at the dialogue between two artists.
- Opening reception: May 23, 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm
- Artists’ talk: June 1, 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm
- Closing reception: June 2, 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm
The show is being run in conjunction with the explorINDONESIAN exhibition. The Indonesian exhibit will also have a special display of Kain Nusantara (Indonesian Traditional Textiles) which should be interesting too.
If you are interested, come on down next Tuesday and say hello!
How cool! I just work down the street from the Roundhouse. I’ll pop in on my lunch hour.
How cool! Celebrations of my Asian brothers and sisters! Have a great time at the event…your dad’s pictures are incredible.
Ha! Those exhibitions must be fascinating! I’ve never exhibited in Canada but have done many photography and dance performances overseas in Singapore , Bali, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Japan and the Europe region. When I moved to the States, I did a show in Washington DC and San Francisco but that’s about it. But I know there is a huge Asian population in Canada. Last Xmas I got to go back to Bali and brought back some ikat weave samples my mom did, she’s Sumatran Chinese and a little Thai and my dad is Balinese Javanese. I wish I’m up there in Vancouver so I can enjoy all the art! Lucky you!

No wonder you’re so talented… must be in your genes.
As you know, I love your dad’s work! They are even better up close! I highly recommend that anyone who can, shouldn’t miss the opportunity to experience his paintings firsthand!
(Kinda like the difference between seeing Sweet Shop yarn online and then holding it in your hands!)
Beautiful. Tell us more: what medium did your dad use, and what is the scale? What size are these landscapes? They are so very lovely.
His paintings are really lovely. I clicked through to his website and enjoyed the misty/twilit look of his trees especially. You must be very proud.
Beautiful yarns by you and beautiful prints by your father! Do you sell the pattern for the fishy feet?
I wish I lived on the West Coast!
