And we all came crashing down…

Doh. Well, saying the Sweet Shop update didn’t work exactly as I had expected would be quite the understatement.

I have to apologize to everybody who was trying to get on the shop site today and just… couldn’t… connect. I’m so so so sorry! We crashed the server yet again… The server guy and I spent about three hours on the phone this afternoon trying to work things out but in the end, we had to disable the site. There were about 500 people trying to access the site at the same time and those hits were taking up about 99% of the server resources. But not to get too technical, we had to kill it so that it wouldn’t cause any more problems for other people trying to access other sites on the same server. sigh. These are growing pains, I guess.

But here is the new plan. The shop is being set up on the new dedicated server right now. It will be the only site on the server, so hopefully it will be able to handle all your affection! We’ll need to wait for the domain name to fully move over to the new server, but I hope to open on Monday, May 8… sometime. I’m nervous about giving a specific time, so it’ll have to be sometime Monday for now.

I really appreciate everybody’s patience and support! And it makes me so happy that you like the yarns… I just want to be able to get these yarns out to you!!

I only tried to log on say maybe… um…well about 800 times. That’s not too many hits, is it? Give its tummy a few pats.

Guilty as charged. I think I hit refresh about 2000 times. That server guy must have been like - what? all this for Yarn? Duh!

Thanks for explaining what happened! I thought my computer was messed up, and certainly was slow. Guess I shouldn’t have clicked on ‘go’ or ‘refresh’ every one of those thousands of times.

Ugh….how will I make it to Monday???

LOVE your yarns. Finishing up the Broadripple in Kissed tonight, will cast on for new pair after that….just to decide on the next colorway….

Me too - I’m very guilty. Oh well, it’s for such a wonderful reason!

I know exactly what you’re going through, trust me everyone will understand. It’ll be so worth it once you move over! hrmm I still think I should put a custom order in, something tells me that I won’t get any yarn on Monday either. :)

  14. Luise says...

Thanks for the explanation. I no longer feel as foolish for repeatedly trying to log on and won’t blame my computer for incompetence. It was yours! — and so understandable. The price of fame, indeed! Good luck. Can’t wait till Monday.

rofl, June took the words right out of my mouth. :)

Knitters crashed it again. You were knittered like some sites get /. or dugg. Nice to know we’re a force to be reckoned with.

Give the poor server a pat from me. The hordes of knitters must scare it into meltdown.

the server guy must think he’s in the wrong business.. he’ll be seen signing up for the next spinning and dye-ing classes!! :) we’ll wait..

  18. Mama Urchin says...

I’d love to hear what that network guy told his spouse about his day. “Yeah, honey, those crazy yarn ladies crashed the server again.” Hooray for the power of yarn!

  19. ivete says...

Wow, what a great compliment, huh? I love the skeins I got from the last batch! Thanks again!

I too, was one of those people trying to get on this afternoon. I even made a point to wake up at 11:45 to try and snag some roving and yarn(I was in between night shifts). I’ll have to do the same on Monday, as I work that night as well! That’s how much I want your stuff! :) I can’t wait to see all the new colorways, Felicia.

While I’m very sad - I was hoping for some biffle, my pocketbook thanks you. Especially with Maryland this weekend. ;)

Good luck getting it all going. Ah the price of fame! Congratulations on being SO DAMNED POPULAR!!! :)

i, too, was one of the many 100s trying to get your yarn. i guess having several windows open hitting refresh in each one didn’t help. ;)

i can wait until next week.

  23. anne says...

heh - that was me (at least partly) - just trying to beat everyone else to the Angel!

  24. Jen da Purse-Ho says...

500+ ppl trying to access? my gawd. you are a legend now. :) but im glad that happened b/c i wasn’t home all day yesterday and wasn’t able to access a computer anyway. giggles

  25. gleek says...

we yarn-buying ANIMALS totally hosed your server!! :) the power of knitting is fierce. i’m glad to see that i still have the opportunity to buy yarn. i’m dying to get some of that candy floss.

  26. Sharon says...

Repeat after me….it’s a good thing. It’s a good thing. ;0) What a happy problem…but now we know there are just too many of us after your lovely dyeing. Out of my way!!!!!! (elbows out) :0)

  27. Laura says...

At least you have the resources to solve the problem! Congratulations on having this type of Problem! :)

  28. Heather says...

Well, it’s nice that you’re having so much success! Congrats (even if it did crash a server). It’s the yarn equivalent of being slash-dotted.

  29. Erika says...

Impressive! When you first made the announcement about the next update, I had wondered if there were going to be problems. I’m not sure if you realize how insanely popular your yarn is; how many people want some; and how badly they want it!

Surely you have considered doing The Yarn Thing full-time. Not sure what the economics are, but the demand is clearly there! Nothing says “I have something that people want very badly” like having to migrate to a dedicated server just to handle the traffic!

Posting smaller batches of a designated color would probably help, too (i.e. “On May 10th I’ll be putting up 2 dozen skeins of Willow.”)

Congratulations on your insane, runaway success! Not many people get to experience demand like that for something they’re trying to sell. You’re doing a really awesome job, under what may be very trying conditions. Keep it up, we love your yarn! :-)

  30. nikki the blogless says...

Congratulations on your continued success. I was lucky enough to get two skeins of superwash sock awhile back and it is definately worth crashing a server for. HeeHee.

what do you think?
