Speak Up.
I think it’s my latent early mid-life crisis speaking up.
Monday evening was spent finishing up my weaving homework while watching surfer flick “Step Into Liquid”… twice.
The weaving is a little sampler that is 80 ends at 10 epi — I’ve used a mix of Quebecoise wool, leftover bits from the school cupboard, and some handspun. The sampler includes a couple inches of each pattern: plain weave (tabby, weft-faced, warp-faced), basketweave, 2/2 twill, 3/1 twill, 1/3 twill, broken twill, horizontal stripes, vertical herringbone and more… This is all being done with a Leclerc Dorothy table loom that I’m borrowing from Place Des Arts.
Last night, we finished off the sampler with some plain hemstitching and twisted fringe. I need to give it a good wash and let it full a little. We shall see how lovely and soft the wool will become!
But in the meantime, I can’t escape the idea of learning how to surf. The thought of leaving work, travelling, visiting warm and sunny locales, relaxing on the beach… with your knitting and spinning wheel, of course… What else do you need for a good early mid-life crisis, anyway?

My mother went to surf camp in Costa Rica the year she turned 50- she had a blast! It was an all-women’s camp, and the same owners have one in Hawaii, too. Now she lives right by the beach and is thinking of buying her own board and really taking it up. You should go!
mmm, i don’t think it’s any kind of crisis
i recently took up horseback riding and it’s just filled me with so much energy! maybe your interest in surfing rather a reaction from all the sitting you do while weaving (and wow, it looks awesome!), spinning, etc. however great fiber is, sometimes it’s nice to have a hobby that makes you move, you know what i mean?
The weaving looks like a lot of fun. You can knit, spin, dye, blend, and weave! So impressive.
Mid-life? You? Nah! But do consider the surfing, sounds like a really good work out.
Give surfing a try! I used to surf back in high school. It was a great workout. I’m too busy chasing a toddler and a baby on the beach to strap on a leash right now. My husby tries to go out there at least once (or seven times) a week and my 6-year-old daughter surfs in the summertime on her little surfboard that our buddy custom made for her. Oh, and I like your sampler, too.
You need to see the movie Riding Giants. I was born and raised in Haleiwa, HI (THE North Shore) and it’s the only “surf movie” that I can watch without laughing histarically. It’s more of a documentary and maybe that’s why I like it. Most of the other surf movies I’ve seen are cheesy and have people trying to speak Pigeon ( Hawaii slang) and they film the locations incorrectly. I’ve never seen Step Into Liquid, I need to rent it.
That is so beautiful. I saw weaving at a fiber festival last summer and walked away very quickly because I am getting addicted to everything fiber related. I love to knit and just got a spinning wheel this Christmas. Now… you are reminding me of the weaving. I’m in trouble… or at least my wallet is.
No No NO!! I am not going to again be inspired by Sweet Georgia’s wonderful work and warp my loom. I am not I am not I am… NO
Lawdy! How many fibre art crafts do you do???
If not surfing try windsurfing
though I have to admit even I am sitting on the shore at the moment waiting for the water to warm up.
I love Step Into Liquid. I think The Endless Summer is my favorite, though. If you haven’t seen it, you totally should.
Step into Liquid is soooo fantastic! Aside from the gorgeous big wave surfing in Hawai’i and other places, the guys from Sheboygan and the Texas ship channel are the best. Tha stoke!
I think we’re on the same wave length (heehee). Last night my hubby and I were talking about taking a vacation and learning to surf.
I really like the colors you chose for your warp. Can’t wait to see the whole sampler!
Your weaving is gorgeous! Those colors work wonderfully together………
go to lajolla for Surf Diva surf school. i LOVED it. but do lots of push ups for a few months beforehand, your arms get really tired!
I love your weaving. Very beautiful.
I grew up in a surfing family…go for it!
You ARE the ultimate FIBER DIVA!
Just out of curiosity…what type of loom (if thats what you call it) are you using? I just might take up weaving, especially after you poisined my mind with you beautiful piece;o)
