Getting raw.

Treenway Silk has their 2006 fleeces listed now and I just bought one. This will be my very first raw fleece — it’s 2.3 kg Gotland ewe fleece that is “cream with light grey tones”. What better marketing for this fleece than to have it featured in the “Lord of the Rings”? Shall I spin and weave this into a cape for myself? Hmm, the possibilities…

Edited to add: Wow. Here is a way better link to the use of Gotland fleece in the costuming for Lord of the Rings.

OOhh - nice link. I’ve been working with some of my first raw wool - its quite fun, a lot of work, but fun.

Heh! The Gotland was my very first fleece too. I still have some of it left. Unfortunately, mine was full of brambles and thorn (and a dead beatle or two) and probably, in hindsight, not a good first fleece but Treenway did warn me about the condition. The wool is wonderful. I just bought another one too.

There’s a fleece sale in May in Langley. It’s the Mother’s Day weekend.

Fun. Thanks for the link to the information on the breed - very interesting. I can’t wait to see what you think of it (and what you make with it too).

How very cool that is! Yes, a cape. Or maybe an arrow holder.

Those little Gotlands are just beautiful. Can’t wait to see what you make with the fleece!

I find it hilarious that the image of the ram on the page you linked has a tupping harness on with a bright red crayon! Very hardy sheep indeed :)

Very cool. Those capes have made me want to start weaving. Oh no!!! Not another hobby.

Thanks so much for the link to Treenway! Hopped over there courtesy of your heads-up and ordered two fleeces — a Gotland and a Perendale. I’ve never spun either breed before and am really looking forward to receiving the fleeces and getting to know the characteristics of the breed. Just found your site through a link and absolutely love it!!!

what do you think?
