Showing your stripes

The sweet shop is updated as of now! I put up the candy-like handspun as well as a bunch more handpainted sock yarns. Plus, there are two skeins of self-striping yarns!

See the difference between handpainted:

Hi, my name is River and I’m handpainted.

and self-striping:

Hi, my name is River Stripe and I make stripes.

It’s a little hard to tell by just looking at the skein how it will knit up, but the self-striping yarns have long stretches of colour that knit into stripes. The handpainted yarns will look more random when knitted up.

Also, some people have said that the yarns are all sold out by the time they get to the shop — so, to find out when the shop has been updated with new yarns, you can use Bloglines to subscribe to the shop’s RSS feed! Just click here…

Enjoy!

The yarn close-ups are totally making my head spin. I SO want to buy new yarns, but trying desperately to use the stash.

I saw your note about winding it into a center pull ball. Did you charge for that? I just orderded that yarn and would love if you did that for me! :)

I love your color sense! What types of dye do you use? the brown is lovely, I can’t seem to get my brown to come out so nicely. Sounds like you are doing really well with your shop….congrats!

As always, absolutely gorgeous stuff. Your eye for color is incredible. A question - how do you dye self-striping yarn at home? Is there a lot of calculation involved?

  13. Nikki says...

That is beautiful yarn. You’ve got quite the eye for colors that go together well.

I second Eunny’s question - how do you dye yarn so that it stripes? Do you put it on a swift and wind it into a big circle and just dip large sections into dye? how big of a section do you need to get even striping? And how do you deal with color bleed between the colors to keep it from turning muddy?

I must confess that I’d be totally lost if I had to identify which was which, the handpainted or the self-striping. I can’t help but prefer self-striping yarns, especially for socks.

wow, your blog is like knitting porn! a question… if any of the sock yarn you are selling on your etsy site was self-striping, it would say so, correct? i really want to buy some, but want it to stripe, and don’t want to be unhappy when it doesn’t, so i thought i would ask first.
