Not quite ready for their closeups
The Manly Sweater (after a year of working on it, off and on) is done! But it’s still drying. I am gifting it to the DH for our anniversary, but again, it’s still drying. It was easy to knit, but I think the armholes are too small…

Look what else is drying… dyed Soy Silk! This stuff is weird. It looks like silk and acts like silk, but is kind of “crunchy” like cotton. I’m looking forward to seeing how it will spin!

And here’s more fibre that’s drying…

That’s Border Leicester roving that I bought in Salt Spring this summer. It’s soft, but not soft like merino! soft. So I’m making…
… a Jayne Cobb hat! If you’ve seen Joss Whedon’s Firefly, you’ll know this is the hat that Jayne receives in the mail, handknit by his mom. I’m going to card (blending the red and yellow to make orange!) and spin up the yarn this weekend and knit it up next weekend when my friends and I get together for a Firefly marathon. All this is prep for the Serenity movie that comes out on September 30. If you want to make one too, this lovely gal has written a pattern for it here…

if your sweater takes too long to dry it will start to smell like laundry that’s been forgotten and left in the washer. let’s just say i had a bad experience with that… put a fan in front of it and it will be dry in no time!
Congrats on finishing your Manly Sweater! I still have the sleeves on mine to finish, but I vow to get it done this fall. Also…Happy Anniversary!
I like that you left out the stripes in the manly sweater. Oh, this time you block after sewing the seams, hmm, interesting.
can’t wait to hear your review of spinning the soy silk. i’ve been curious but am too chicken :O)
You’re very hardcore, spinning yarn for a Jayne hat. How authentic!
I’m planning on making one of those hats for a friend for Christmas. We just finished watching it this week, and I’m so, so sad it’s over. We’ve had the dvds for 2 years, but we saved them somehow until now. I heard Joss Whedon lost creative control of the movie and I’m worried.
I’m planning on using Paton’s Classic Wool doubled for the hat…if memory serves from a bag my sister is knitting, it comes in exactly the right colours.
I love the Manly Sweater. Where is it from? And that soy silk - divine. I can’t wait to see all the yarn you make this weekend. Yummy.
The Manly Sweater looks very manly indeed! Love it. Happy Anniversary!! I’ll definitely be checking out the Sweet Shop!!
Congratulations on the sweater! That soy silk is really interesting. Weaving Works (Seattle) carries the stuff and I always like to squish it when I walk by. I hope it spins up well.
You’re GOT to tell me exactly how you dyed that soy silk. That stuff is like my enemy! I can never get dye to take on it. Mine is bleached soy silk. What is yours? It’s beautiful.
that sweater is great — just the kind that will be worn for years to come. really a great anniversary present! is it a surprise?
ps - i’m with shobhana — a fan works wonders!
AH! a fellow Firefly fan! how rare! we’ve watched season 1 (all measely 13 episodes of it, sob) a million times. can’t wait for the movie!
your husband would be thrill with the sweater!! please take photos of the fit, my husband wants a sweater that it fits around the waist so i’m curious to see how yours turn out.
soy silk is interesting, as with all your other dyeing projects.
Yay! Firefly! Jayne’s hat! Serenity!
The Manly Sweater looks great! I would love to see it on because the only sweater I knit for my husband doesn’t fit too well, and I’d like to see one that fits some male well (and I know yours will!).
I’m knitting a Jayne hat too, out of Brown Sheep Lamb’s Pride. The colors I found are so spot-on and the yarn is so similar in thickness and texture that I wonder if that’s what they used for the hat on the show.
A bunch of my friends saw the movie at one of the big preview screenings back in the Spring. I had to miss it, unfortunately. But they all said that while they could imagine it being more perfect, it’s really good and they were happy about how some of the stuff from the show got developed and/or resolved.
Congrats on your anniversary! Don’t you hate it when you see the “pool” develop along the edges of your piece on the blocking board? That’s when you KNOW it will take forever to dry. I read somewhere about puting a fan in the room to help speed it along. Maybe you should give it a try. Can’t wait to see how the soysilk turns out!
i LOVE firefly and can’t wait to see they jayne hat you make. i’ve been pondering making one myself, but i won’t have your lovely yarn to do it with. have fun at the marathon and post a pic of you in the hat!
I just received your yarn package! It’s even more beautiful than I imagined. I can’t wait to sit down and choose a pattern for it….
Who knew that there were so many knitting Firefly fans? We should start a yahoo group or something. Thanks so much for the link to the hat–it’s a perfect gift idea for my friend who introduced me to the series a while back!
Your Manly Sweater looks great; I hope we’ll get a manly photo soon with your manly hubby modeling! That’s a pattern that my own manly hubby might actually consider wearing. He’s so stinking picky…
That photo of the soy silk is beautiful.
Hurrah! The manly sweater is finally finished! The soy silk looks gorgeous! I can’t wait to see what it looks like all spun and happily knit!
Do you think I should knit Jayne a Jayne hat?! Hmmm, it might be more Adam’s style…
Happy anniversary!
your sweater is NIIIIIIICE. i want a blocking board now!
OMG. I love Jayne. Adam Baldwin is my new crush. Dan and I are watching the Firefly DVDs, too. I can’t wait for the movie to come out!
i LOVE that episode when jayne gets the hat from his mom. it’s such a sweet moment and everyone on the ship sees that jayne actually DOES have a soft side. i want to make one too! and i’m glad to hear that you’re a firefly fan. shiny.
I have a husband sweater that’s armholes are too small myself, but mine are drastically too small and are going to need sewing then cutting out the fabric in order to proceed. I’m trying to work up the courage to make that my next project after my current sweater.
Teeheehee on the hat from Firefly. I saw that episode and thought the hat was awesome. Hadn’t actually thought to knit it up.
The Manly Sweater is beautiful!!! Can’t wait to see more of the soy silk - it’s gorgeous
Fiber doesn’t work that way, you’ll probably get speckled yarn. It will still be beautiful and I guarantee you’ll like it, and from afar it will look orange. I’d love to see a close-up when you’re done.
I LOVE that photo of the silk hanging to dry! The colours are beautiful.
A man they call Jayne… We’ll be at the movie, maybe on opening night. Otoh, Matt says I’ve made fun of it too much, so I may only be “allowed” to go with him on the 2nd viewing.
I keep coming back to look at that soy silk. Beautiful.
I am so happy to meet another Firefly fan. I have been enjoying the reruns on SciFi. I will have to make a Jayne hat for myself
Thanks for the inspiration.
The hat is amusing, but the thing that amazes me is that I can find no mention anywhere of the fabulous aran/cable knit sweater worn by Wash at the end of that same episode (”The Message”). I’m dying to get hold of the pattern, or at least a good photo of it. Does anybody know where such a thing could be found?
Thanks-
Eileen
I don’t know where to find a good pic of Wash’s sweater in “The Message,” but here are a couple of half-pics…if someone was really dedicated they could maybe come up with something, I hope.
