Trellis: Another baby sweater

Monday, August 8th, 2005

Baby things are so deceiving. They look so small, so cute, so… quick to knit… I get so easily sucked into the dream that I’ll be able to knit that baby thing up in no time. Of course, the operative words here are “no time”. What with working on the weekends and evenings, I can barely get a few rows in here and there. Of course that hasn’t stopped me from starting several new projects, ordering more yarn and more patterns… Anyhow. Here’s the start of Knitty’s Trellis baby coat/cardigan:

I’m knitting this in some Rowan All Seasons Cotton that I picked up at Knitopia on the weekend. I think the colour is discontinued since I can’t find it on my latest Rowan shade cards. Oh, it’s Monday morning and my brain is totally fogged. I don’t even think this coffee is doing the trick.

Destashing a bit…

Sunday, August 7th, 2005

A couple months ago, I had a bit of an oops moment when I bought duplicates of a Jaeger pattern book and some shade cards. I finally have gotten around to destashing and have posted them for sale on Ebay now. Check it out…

These are just the books for now, but I’ll be listing some yarn too in the next few days! Must clear out some space in the yarn tub(s) for Fall stuff!

Made the cut

Friday, August 5th, 2005

I finally made the cut. It wasn’t as freaky as I thought it might be.

And the second cut.

Have you seen Diana’s version? It’s beautiful.

Life before Colour Correction

Tuesday, August 2nd, 2005

I just picked up a copy of Alice Starmore’s “Pacific Coast Highway” from an interlibrary loan. Realize that this same book just sold for $256 CDN on Ebay this past weekend. Crazy, I tell you, crazy.

There are just two items that I might make out of here: the Grant Avenue vest and the Abalone cardigan. I’m obsessing over Grant Avenue right now because I want to get the colours “just right”. It doesn’t help when these photos were published without attention to correct colours! See below:

Which version is correct?

You can see a real life example of this at Junieann’s site. She knit up Grant Avenue just a few months ago, using stashed AS Campion in the exact colours specified in the pattern. How is it that her vest looks completely different than the book’s photo? Here’s another example on Veronique’s site and also here.

Knitting on the Road

Tuesday, August 2nd, 2005

Like many people, I’ve had Nancy Bush’s book, “Knitting on the Road” for a while and have not yet knit anything out of it. So the new KOTR knit-along is a great motivator. It will be an ongoing KAL where we knit a pair of socks every two months using a pattern from the book. Last week, we voted on which sock to knit and “Friday Harbour” came up as the final decision. Here’s my start:

I’m using some yarn that I dyed in a crockpot with washfast acid dyes. Being “Friday Harbour”, I was going for a kind of watery theme. Ah well, it’s an excuse to knit up some stashed yarn. Besides, it seems incredibly difficult to find the recommended Mountain Colors Weavers Wool in Vancouver.

Rather than use DPNs, I’m using my Addi circs (3mm) for magic loop again. I just put stitches from needles 1 and 3 on one side of the loop and the stitches from needle 2 on the other side of the loop. The chart has so far been easy to follow and it’s working itself pretty quickly — it’s only 49 stitches around now.

Oh, and here is another sock I knit on Friday: my first toe-up, short-row heel sock in my very own handspun!

One Polwarth sock

I chose a skein of the craziest, most barber-poled handspun and used Wendy’s Generic Toe-Up Sock pattern for this. It’s all 30g of yarn knit up. I used a sewn Tubular 1×1 cast off for this (see Katherine Buss’ Big Book of Knitting — it’s fabulous)… but mainly because when I first cast off normally, I couldn’t get the sock on my foot!
