Fall is on its way…
Another day, another stash acquisition! Mmm, that’s right, I’m stashing for Fall projects now…
Little Knits is closing out their Cascade yarns, so I broke down and bought a pack of Cascade 220 for my St. Brigid… It was wonderfully priced at $4 something per skein. Funny, Cascade 220 isn’t sold at any of the LYSs in Vancouver, but it is available in the middle of nowhere. These availability issues, I just don’t understand. Anyway, here’s the colour I picked… plum. I originally wanted something heathered looking, but decided to go with this nice solid colour…

Also as a result of Wendy’s needle quest, I found myself ordering ebony needles from Susanne in Germany. I bought a set of 2.5, 3.0 and 3.25 mm Holz & Stein ebony circulars that I’ll be using for my fall Fair Isle projects. Yay.

On a quick detour after a client meeting Richmond, I picked up last fall’s Japanese knitting magazine called “News Style of Heirloom Knitting”. Very cute patterns throughout — there are at least three projects in each traditional knitting style: Fair Isle colourwork, Aran knitting, and Shetland lace. Beautiful and inspirational photos of knitted colour swatches… it just seems to exude the luxury of time. Ah, to be able to sit and slowly decide on colourways or textures…

Anne at SheEweKnits has the new Jamieson’s Shetland Heather Aran in stock, so I’ll be ordering the yarn for the DH’s Na Craga sweater. I’m excited to use this yarn and pattern — it was kind of a jaw-dropping experience when I first opened “Aran Knitting” and I’ve been dreaming about it ever since.
And finally, I have a bunch more stuff on order: the multitude of yarns for the Rowan 38 cover vest, Rebecca 30 magazine, the new RYC Classic pattern books, a Schacht Dizzy Gauge (I can’t believe this thing is $16), and a yarn meter. I think my wallet is tired now.
Ouch. Well at least you’ve got enough to keep you occupied through the fall (at least!)
Please review the ebony circ’s when you get a chance. They do look really pointy.
What a beautiful color. I love plum, can’t wait to see it knitted up.
That plum is pretty, it’s great that you got a good price. And those ebony needles are nice, too.
I can’t wait to see your St. Brigid. That yarn is a lovely color.
Oh, how I wish the Japanese knitting magazine and book companies would start making translations and selling them over here in the US. They would make a boatload! Some of the prettiest patterns I’ve seen have been in Japanese mags and books, and I could never make them because I couldn’t get my hands on them, or understand them if I did. The sweater on the front of the one you pictured is gorgeous… sort of like an Aran, but much nicer than any of the ones I’ve seen elsewhere.
DROOL
Maybe I can console myself with the idea that they probably wouldn’t have anything over US size small, anyways. NAAAAHHH! That really isn’t any consolation!
I love my ebony circulars.
I have that New Style of Heirloom Knitting too. It’s such a beautifully presented knitting book. Just wish I understood the words
too. I like the pink wavy triangle shawl.
First comment! I love your pictures. I’ve been watching this sweater and the swatches for 10 minutes now. They are just gorgious! Thank you for showing.
Wow - that’s almost the exact same color I had in mind for my St. Brigid, which I also want to do in Cascade 220. And I also agree that something slightly heathered would be nice, too.
I need to see if my LYS got the color card yet. She said she’d special order a bag for me. Yay!
What a pretty color of Cascade!
Also, if you don’t mind my asking, could you let me know where you ordered your needles from? I’m interested in obtaining a set, but haven’t been able to find them anywhere.
I have to chime in about the availability of yarn choices in Canada…it’s puzzling isn’t it?! Not to mention the price comparisons too. A lot of the times the yarn is way less from another country even with risking duty/taxes across the border than it is to order from right here in Canada. Frustrating sometimes…Canada has lots of knitters don’t we??!! I mean, it’s cold here, you would think we do??!! LOL
Hi Felicia,
I’d like to know the name and particulars for your German source of the needles, too, please. Thanks.
Might I enquire as to how you bought those circs? I’ve been searching for those for quite a while.
That is a fabulous color for your St. Brigid. Watch the tips of the needles, my mom’s most recent pair had two different size tips.
I love those circs - hope you like them also! By the way, where did you get the Harry Potter scarve pattern - I would like to make it. Thank you for the info.
I’ve been drooling over needles from Susanne too, and what a great thing - order some for my Butterfly project. I’m doing that this week! Thanks for the inspiration. Your fall projects look/sound quite lovely, but you’re going to be a busy lady.
The plum yarn for St.Brigid is beautiful. What a find! And the pattern for your DH’s sweater is just gorgeous. He is so lucky
I’m bad…I have yet to make my hubby a sweater.
Love those ebony needles. Where did you get them?
I also have the New Style of Heirloom Knitting. The patterns are so pretty but so difficult to knit. It’s a good book to keep though
Would love to know your source for holz stein needles. Bought some last year in Zurich - can’t remember where - they are my favorite!!
Will you share your H&S needle source?
thanks, Jennifer
Love that plum color and what a great deal! The two swatches in the middle are my favorites - so pretty.
Just FYI…….. for future reference if need be…..Knitopia in White Rock does carry Cascade 220 and so does Kept in Stitches in Fort Langley (but not a lot of colours). Knitopia has tonos of colours in stock but I think for some reason they might not have a lot on their shelves out front. She has tons hanging on a wall in the back room. They also carry some of the other Cascade yarns. The guys in Chilliwack are actually the Canadian distributors for Cascade yarns.
But I know what you’re talking about….. I’m often having a frustrating time tracking down certain yarns in Canada that are so easily had in the US. And then with my ties to Europe, I often pick up patterns and want a specific yarn that’s a dime a dozen over there and nearly impossible or totally impossible to get here… very frustrating at times.
You can get Cascade 220 at our North Shore Chicks With Sticks group. The organizer sells it from her home. Let me know if you want her number. Li
Where did you get that book? I’m going to Tokyo later this month. It looks cool, if I buy anything in Japan it will prolly be cool craft books.
Hi, just stumbled across your blog. Your pictures are beautiful. I love that Japanese knitting book. One of my friends just bought it last week, and I’ve been borrowing it. The black lace stole and cover sweater are gorgeous. Everything in it is gorgeous!
I also have been searching for Holtz & Stein circular needles. A member of my knitting group loves them for lace knitting. Would you be willing to tell us where we might purchase some?
Cascade 220 is now available at Urban Yarns in Vancouver. They have about 8 colours in stock and will special order any colour for you. Yay!!!
