It’s been a crappy week — too much work, too little sleep, being snarky enough with clients that they actually notice (oops). Ah, you know. Here’s the shrug I’m rushing to finish… it’s in Rowan Summer Tweed:
And here’s proof that I’m still knitting the Manly Sweater. Here’s the finished front! Two sleeves to go.
So in my search for an appropriate Scottish Heather yarn sub, I’m going to try to get my hands on a sample of Jamieson’s Soft Shetland (soon to be called Shetland Heather Aran). Anne at She Ewe Knits is sending me a sample card and some yarn for me to test drive. I found the Simply Shetland site and have been considering these colours:
Do you think it’s funny that “North Sea” looks almost the same as the colour of the Manly Sweater?
Yes, that’s right. In my current obsession with Starmore and that darned “Aran Knitting” book, I’ve glommed onto the idea of knitting a St. Brigid for myself. Funny enough, I’m actually ok with this aran sweater being oversized. What I’m _not_ ok with is a huge fair isle sweater. I don’t want to put myself through [this kind of stress](http://onemorerow.blogdrive.com/archive/19.html).
I like the tweedy blue you picked for your second shrug. For my first one, I used Noro in 34, but ran out of yarn when it came time to do the ribbed edging, so I only ribbed the lower back and around the neck. This time around, I purchased an extra ball of yarn, but instead of doing the ribbed edging, I may just do the moss stitch. What do you think?
I’d suggest waiting until the color cards come. I was surprised the first time I saw the soft shetland, by how much more complex the heathered colors were in person, compared to how they looked on a monitor.

As for the giant sweater, I doubt you would do that. Not to be snarky myself (I used the word snarky in conversation the other day — do other people know this word?) but I think you would notice, if as you were knitting along, it seemed enormous. It seems, sometimes, like people must have been knitting with their eyes closed, they’re so surprised at the results. As I told my class on Tuesday night, it’s not a bad idea to check your gauge against what the pattern says to cast on against the schematic and make sure the three jive, and check things along the way. You’re a smart enough girl to do that…you won’t accidentally knit a giant fair isle sweater without knowing it. Always, ALWAYS, pick a size by the measurement, not by the word used to describe whether it is small, medium, or large.
and here i was thinking that i was the only person obsessing over knitting an staremore design at the moment. the only thing is the pattern i want is only available as a kit from vitual yarns. i’m thinking i won’t be buying it this winter – but may fork out early next year…if i am still obsessing about it that is.
the shrug looks wonderful, it’s such a great pattern. is the Summer Tweed bulkier than the Cashermino Aran? I’ve just bought some Cashmerino Aran in pink (to be a copycat, cuz i loved your pink one so), but now i’m wonderful if i should cast on a few more stitches and make it a lil bigger.
Just wanted to add that I’m using Paton’s Classic Merino for St. Brigid and it’s wonderful. I got it for a song at Smiley’s online, and am so glad I did. The fabric is so soft, and the cables pop beautifully. I’m sure the Jameison’s is unbelievable, but I thought I’d let you know about the Paton’s as well… there’s always the next sweater!!
Go, Summer Tweed! I’m making the Wonder in a yellow Summer Tweed and I really like it so far. Yours looks very nice! Your first one was cute too, even if it turned out a bit small.

I love the colours of the manly sweater and the North sea yarns. And the blues are gorgeous too. St Brigid is a lovely sweater, I’d love to hear how it goes. I recently read someone’s notes about knitting it (I can’t remember who) and she said that it was a dream to knit and not an error in the pattern. That has to be a plus
