I’m spinning thin singles with this but haven’t decided if I want to ply it. If I leave it as singles, they will be sock-weight-ish. If I navajo-ply it, I’ll get worsted-weight. I’d like to ply it on itself but I can’t figure out Andean plying. I heard of another method of making a 2-ply: winding the singles into a centre-pull ball, then plying using the two ends of the ball — but I also heard this can get messy. Hmm. Maybe I’ll keep it as flashy, colourful singles that will make stripes when knit up.

A WW is great! I see that yours is building a slightly cone-shaped cop. Mine did that, too, and Nathan suggested that I turn the moving eye (mindful of the solder) ever so slightly to even it up. Yours looks like it needs to twist counterclockwise, looking from the top. Plying from two ends of a ball is commonly done, but it is a sloppy technique if you’re after the perfect yarn. (Plying this way inherently alters the amount of twist in the singles.) I like Andean plying for small amounts, not a full bobbin of yarn. If you want, wind your singles into two equal weight balls (not center-pull) and ply those together. You can keep them in bowls to prevent them from running all over the place. Better yet, use storage bobbins.

I think it looks pretty as a singles, but like June said, you can always try the two balls in bowls method (that sounds awful doesn’t it? LOL). Anyways, I did that sometimes with singles I spun on my drop spindle and it worked pretty well. I don’t think you can Andean ply as much yarn as you have on your bobbin…it’d be a lot of work. Love the colors of that roving BTW.

Beautiful colors! You could wind half off onto another bobbin and ply them together that way…I think. Of course the yarn is beautiful as is!

I ply from 2 ends of a ball frequently - I don’t have a problem with it being sloppy at all, as a matter of fact, I have some of my best balanced yarns plied that way. It looks very nice as is, indeed!

Good idea to use the WW on the Joy. Don’t think about the Andean ply for this project. It’s more useful for spindle work. Insted, DO use the center pull ball. I do that all the time, it is no problem. Just make sure that you center pull from the proper side. Pull a little bit first and see how it works.

here’s a great link for andean plying. It has plain photos, written instructions, and video. I love to andean ply my yarns because it guarantees no leftovers on a bobbin. Good luck - you’re spinning looks wonderful.
