Higher Tech Happiness
Apparently, when I get addicted, I also get a little obessive compulsive. I spend yesterday afternoon test-driving spinning wheels at Birkeland Bros. and got to try the Ashford Traveller, Joy and Traditional wheels… and then I came home with the Ashford Joy!

I had originally thought that I would prefer the Traveller, but when I tried it, I found my ankles kept bumping into the wheel as I tried treadling. Also, I found it tougher to get treadling. The Joy was much easier to treadle (I believe it has weighted treadles?) and much smoother. I love that the Joy is fully assembled and so small that I can carry it! The Traditional was lovely too, but the version I tried was a single treadle, not so ergonomic and seemed like it would be too big for our house.
And here’s what I’ve been spinning so far… some of that Kool-Aid corriedale. Fun fun fun.
Oh bloody hell Felicia, stop with the photos!!! ;0) I don’t need another addiction! It looks like so much fun.
Awesome! What a sweet wheel! My mom is giving me her old wheel, but she has to drive it cross-country to me….now, I am hoping she plans a trip soon! In the meantime, she is sending me her old drop spindle that you inspired me to seek out.
i am SO jealous. i won’t be able to afford a wheel for months yet and the only one i can afford is the kiwi. you’re a lucky lucky girl!
Congrats and a great choice, much spinning happiness!
oh - it’s GORGEOUS! when i was shopping - i was considering the traveller & the traditional, and I think I would have ended up with the traveller, but my hubby bought me the traditional for my birthday. what’s a girl to do?
I love it so much. I just wish I had more time to spend with it.
Oh Joy!!!! You’re gonna love your Joy. Love your site. Your hand dyeing is wonderful. Can’t wait to see more.
oh boy, looks like you had so much fun. I would love to try it out. I do not have any knowledge in spinning and yarn dyeing at all. Love all the colors, please knit up a swatch and show us!
Congrats on the wheel! Joys seem like really well-made machines. I tried one once and was very impressed by the precision. Have fun!
Congrats Felicia! And welcome to the world of wheel spinning! I am glad that you had the opportunity to “try” out wheels and find one that you like! (I didn’t, but don’t regret getting the traveller either!) Ashfords are great wheels and real workhorses as I am sure you have discovered!
Your KA dyeing is beautiful! I am just waiting for the chance to get some more roving so I can try it myself!
The Joy is a great wheel, have fun with it! I thought about getting a Traveller, but at the last minute, bought a Majacraft Rose. I’m glad I did, it’s a beautiful wheel. Love your photos.
