Blocking Highgate

While knitting Highgate in public, the most frequently asked question was “oh! is that for a little kid?”. When I say, “no, it’s for me…” I get weird looks as if I’m totally delusional about fitting into such a narrow sweater. Please enter “blocking”. I know, blocking ribbing is a no-no, but in this case, I checked my blocked swatch and the photo in the pattern book and, yes, I believe this sweater needs some serious blocking.

Appropriate finished size vs. skinny kid size.

On the front piece, I also modified the shoulder shaping to try out short rows… Excellent fun. It leaves I nice smooth shoulder for seaming… Of course, it would have made sense to do a three-needle bind-off, but I had already bound off all the back shoulder stitches, so… whatever.

Ooh, nice shoulders.

I love your Highgate, it’s just beautiful. The colour, the shape, the pattern, everything… Oh and the shoulders too, obviously. Quick question, where did you get your blocking board? I have been looking for one and yours looks most fine. A. x

I love short-row shaping for shoulders, it avoids the entire “step” look. The seams will look very neat, not that anyone will notice considering how lovely and intricate the cables are!

Your ribbing doesn’t look to have suffered any in the blocking process. I don’t think finishing would go nearly as smoothly if you hadn’t done it.

How lovely! I think a sweater like this should have the ribbing blocked. I’m working on a cardi with substantial ribbing, and I am partially blocking it out just to avoid it being too form fitting.

Can’t wait to see it finished!

That sweater is gorgeous! I am bookmarking this so I can use when I start my own Highgate… hopefully sometime this decade. I am also curious about the blocking board.

Looks great! I just learned short row shaping for shoulders too! It looks so good, I don’t know why I didn’t start doing them from the beginning! Can’t wait to see Highgate all seamed up!

I love the colour of your Highgate! It’s perfect for Spring. Would you be nice enough to tell me what you use for a blocking board? I particularly like that it’s squared off. I can’t seem to find anything around here that isn’t cheap paper cardboard. So if you could, please tell me the Namebrand and where you ordered or bought it from. I would really like to get my hands on such a good quality one as yours seems to be. Are you happy with yours?

Your photo gallery is VERY well done. One of the best I’ve seen-can mere mortals do this? Could you please email me and give me just a hint?
