Selfish or Practical.

Whatever Margene’s got, it’s going around.

Yes, I know I said, just yesterday, that I was going to knit this lovely baby blanket for the shower. See lovely baby blanket photo below:

But after an hour of knitting, I ended up with just over one inch of beautiful yellow cashmerino blanket. Since the blanket is supposed to be at least 30 inches long, I need a “spare” 29 hours between today and next Saturday to finish it.

That’s the practical end of it — I just won’t have enough time to finish, so I’m off for another yarn expedition. This time to buy a tiny bit of yarn to make a tiny hat and booties. So impractical for a new mom, but hey this is a girly shower, right?

The selfish side of it is that I really, really, really love this colour, this yarn, this blanket and so… I want to keep it.

Yellow Blanket, I will finish you someday and you will be mine!

In other selfish yarn stashing, Elann released new stock of their Peruvian Collection Baby Silk this morning. “Baby Silk” is an alpaca/silk blend and is (yay) 4-ply and so I stocked up on 14 and 15 balls of their seashell pink and raspberry colours for two Jaeger sweaters.

I love the baby blanket and now think that I’ll make it for myself too - it’s from the new Debbie Bliss book, right? I am coming to your wonderful city (it’s actually one of my favourite cities) with my girlfriend in April (it’s one of those get away from husbands and kids weekends). Any suggestions for yarn shops? We are staying at the Opus but can find our way around anywhere.

Don’t feel guilty! The baby will never know the difference. :)

    And the yellow is gorgeous!

Gorgeous blanket. I would also be tempted to keep it for myself.

By the way, where do you get your Phildar mags from? They are hard to find here in the US, and I wondered if you could recommend somewhere up your way to order them from. What do you think of the recent issue?

Also wonderful is elann’s baby cashmere - alpaca, merino, cashmere. Yum!

You and me both…… raspberry and seashell pink - ordered first thing this morning. :-)

You know, we’ve probably done it all at some point: made something we couldn’t give away. Years ago I made a cute, little baby sweater for some friends. When I was finished I rationalized that they weren’t really that close of friends for a whole home made sweater and so I stashed it away for me for one day down the line… and I must say, my little one, did look so cute in that sweater. I was glad I kept it for purely selfish reasons.

Good thing you changed your mind about the baby gift before you spent a lot of time on it! Thanks for the tip about the elann silk/alpaca. I was thinking about using it for other projects but I wasn’t sure about the weight of it.

I made a baby quilt once that I decided (at the last minute) to keep, and I’m glad I did. Anyway, I have made 4 pairs of Koigu booties for my newborn, and I think they ARE practical! They are warm and they stay on, unlike baby socks. I don’t know how my other 2 lived without them! Besides the fact that they are super cute and get lots of comments.

Hi ho Hi Ho - off to Elann I go! I so didn’t need to know…

I love the blanket you selected to knit for your friend; it’s really too bad that time won’t allow you to complete it before Saturday.

I have a lot of friends who are having babies, too, and have knit many hats and booties as gifts. I think that handknit booties are very practical, because the majority of commercial booties and socks do not stay on those little feet.

Ah yes, my dream conversation of the week: Me: “I won’t be in to work for the rest of the week.” Boss: “Oh, Why?” Me: “Well, I’ve this baby blanket that I want to finish knitting and I need to find an extra 29 hours in my schedule.” Boss: “Oh, that really sounds relaxing, and you’ve been working so hard and travling so much, that’s a wonderful idea. In fact, why don’t you take off thru Tuesday and come in next Wedneday.”

    Then I woke up.

    Beautiful work!

What a beautiful blanket that will be in yellow. Something different that the typical pink or blue!

When my friend gets pregnant, I am going to do the hat & booties thing also. They will love it!

So now that you’re keeping it, what will you do with it?

Your blog is very beautiful. It makes me feel happy. I can appreciate samples of beautiful knitting without the temptation to buy anything. I’m from Vancouver, but I live in Los Angeles. It is great to such a high standard of quality coming from the home town.
