Overdose

Tuesday, February 22nd, 2005

It’s brilliantly sunny in Vancouver right now and I just want to play hooky from work today. But no go — I have a client meeting at 5:30 pm tonight.

I’m enjoying my current overdose of new knitting patterns. Not only did I receive my Rowan 37 today, but I also found the Spring Interweave Knits AND the Spring Phildar Tendances magazines at my door. Maaahhhvelous. Now, it’s just a matter of picking projects…

But first things first. Last night, before an evening of Thai movies and food (we saw “Ong-Bak” and went to Salathai for dinner), I picked up two new baby knitting books — no, no, not for me — for those family and friends who are baby-making. One is Debbie Bliss’s brand new book, “Special Knits” and the other is Erika Knight’s “Knitting for Two”.

I’m going to be knitting the baby blanket/shawl from Debbie Bliss’s book in, obviously, DB Baby Cashmerino (geez, what else would she specify in her book?). It will be yellow. Yellow is the colour of undeterminate gender. I wish all parents-to-be would just find out if they are having girls so that I can run out and buy pink yarn instead.

Kristine at Digital Yarn is hosting a new KAL for this lovely, fluffy cache coeur in GGH Soft Kid. The unofficial start date is March 1st, so head on over to Digital Yarn…. I’ll be starting as soon as Knit ‘n’ Stitch receives their copies of Rebecca… all this waiting!

Something new at Handworks Gallery: “Introducing two new yarns for Spring 2005, Bettina and Allegra… coming soon from Adrienne Vittadini.”

Although, I do like that blue ruffled sweater…

Double Trouble

Sunday, February 20th, 2005

In a moment of online buying madness, I managed to accidently purchase duplicates of the new Jaeger Siena pattern book and the new RYC Classic shade cards (Cashsoft and Cashcotton). Now, I have to first offer these duplicate items to my girlfriends here in town, but if they don’t want them, I’ll be open to selling or trading them… more when I know what they decide.

Silly girl. Liked me so much, she bought me twice.

Cashsoft 4-ply

The Cashsoft 4-ply is a good potential for that Vogue Knitting 1954 twinset! But look at the nice new patterns in these two books:

Jaeger 4-ply: Ok, ok. These are the same pattern, “Tansy”, but in a high-end Cashmina version (left) and a less expensive Matchmaker Merino 4-ply version (right). Hmm, to bead or not to bead….

I like LeAnne’s comment from yesterday — “Start ‘em all!”. Why not? I could, in fact, start that Lacy Cardi in the Rowan 4-ply cotton I already have… I mean, it’s yarn that’s sitting there, waiting to be knit. Ah, I love starting new projects!

His and Hers Sock Progress

Knit me a round toe!

Hers:

Here is the sock that I’m packing around town with me lately. Plain and simple stockinette in DGH Confetti — the pattern of this self-patterning yarn is nowhere near as exciting to knit as the Regia yarn, but hey, I plan to knit through my sock yarn stash! I am, however, very pleased with how the heel flap ended up — entirely in white yarn, surrounded by the checkerboard pattern — pure coincidence and pure magic!

The great thing about this pattern is that it is so easy, so mindless, that I can, in fact, knit it anywhere, anytime — in the elevator, walking on the street, in the movies — you get it. A marvelous project to have with you at all times. Your sock, don’t get caught without it.

His:

This is the awesome progress the DH has made on his sock since he cast on (last Monday, after Valentine’s Day dinner). I’m not even being facetious. Sure it’s going to take him a bit of time to finish, but he’s making steady progress, learning to fix his own mistakes, knitting 1×1 ribbing for the first time, AND learning to use the magic loop technique… all on his first project. Pretty ambitious, IMHO.
