Overdose

It’s brilliantly sunny in Vancouver right now and I just want to play hooky from work today. But no go — I have a client meeting at 5:30 pm tonight.

I’m enjoying my current overdose of new knitting patterns. Not only did I receive my Rowan 37 today, but I also found the Spring Interweave Knits AND the Spring Phildar Tendances magazines at my door. Maaahhhvelous. Now, it’s just a matter of picking projects…

But first things first. Last night, before an evening of Thai movies and food (we saw “Ong-Bak” and went to Salathai for dinner), I picked up two new baby knitting books — no, no, not for me — for those family and friends who are baby-making. One is Debbie Bliss’s brand new book, “Special Knits” and the other is Erika Knight’s “Knitting for Two”.

I’m going to be knitting the baby blanket/shawl from Debbie Bliss’s book in, obviously, DB Baby Cashmerino (geez, what else would she specify in her book?). It will be yellow. Yellow is the colour of undeterminate gender. I wish all parents-to-be would just find out if they are having girls so that I can run out and buy pink yarn instead.

Oh, I so agree with you about parents-to-be finding out what gender they’re expecting! It makes it so much easier on us who desire to make them something! By the way, your posted photos are of such great quality - - do you take them in natural light? Or do you just have a camera that costs 1k?? :)

Funnily enough I also received my Spring Phildar and Rowan 37 last night. (Considering I live in Melbourne, Australia - it is great how our two postal systems were so cooridinated!) How good is the new Phildar! I am very very happy.

My sister and brother-in-law have insisted for three babies that they want the gender to be a surprise! For babies 1 and 2 I made 2 blankets, lucking out that I made the correct color first each time or else I wouldn’t have finished on time. Baby 3 is getting a yellow blanket once he or she arrives next week. :)

you know, i’ve been wanting to get a copy of “knitting for two” by erika knight, every time i’m at barnes and nobles, i’ll go to the knitting section and flip through that book and so want to get it… the patterns are all so adorable, both mothers and babies. esp. the pixie hat!!!

i told my husband that maybe i’ll get that book now so to avoid if it runs out of print by the time we decide to have babies.

Hmm. Debbie Bliss also has nice patterns from other books as well “How To knit” and Tricot Simplissime” (i do not know what’s the name of this English version)

I understand how ‘gift-givers’ can be frustrated picking gender safe colours for baby gifts. Still, there are so few real surprises in this world, the gender of an unborn baby being one of them. I never found out what gender my babies were when I was pregnant. I got a lot of yellow stuff, but some people were funkier and went for oranges, greens, greys, blues, and browns. I loved the variety of things knit and bought for me and I now dread the thought of pink and blue anything! Be bold, go for something ‘out-there’! Not a fan of Debbie Bliss’s baby sweaters, they are so often boxy. Phildar’s newest layette has some fab choices!

what do you think?
