Lacy Baby Bonnet
After deciding to keep the blanket, I figured I had to knit something else for the baby shower. So I picked the Lacy Bonnet project from the “Knitting for Two” book and knit it up in one evening:
The pattern calls for Rowan Wool Cotton — a nice DK weight yarn, super soft and pretty. But you know the Murphy’s Law of yarn buying: you can never find the yarn that you are looking for, and if you do happen to find it, it’s always the wrong colour. So yes, apparently in all of the Lower Mainland, there are six balls of Rowan Wool Cotton and they are all pink. Instead, I used a single ball of Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Aran in a buttery yellow. It’s a little thicker than Wool Cotton, but it makes for a less flimsy bonnet, I think.
Now I’m wondering, should I add the big satin bow that the pattern specifies? Or maybe just go with an i-cord? The i-cord is likely more practical, eh? Here’s the original photo from Erika Knight’s book:

Hi-this is a very nice bonnet. I have bought some Rowan Calmer to do something similar to a bonnet - but as the baby is not born yet (actually not even conceived) i figured i should as well plan a unisex bonnet !! If you happen to find one in this book - please let me know !

Beautiful! I would skip the bow. An i-cord or a cotton ribbon, used only to secure the cap on the head of the baby would be far more practical, and look much better, in my opinion.
That hat is just too cute! Makes me want to make baby stuff again. Almost. But I’d also advise against the ribbon. Or at least one that’s almost as big as the baby’s head!

My vote is for the I-cord. It would look more complete with it than the ribbon. Somehow adding a different texture would look manufactured and not handcrafted.

I guess I’m the only weirdo that likes the ribbon! It gives it a cute vintage, flapper like look. But whatever you do if you choose the ribbon, don’t have bows on both sides like the book does.
I love the look of the bonnet — you did a lovely job with it. I do think the bow looks kind of cool, but I’m thinking it’s a mite impractical.

I like the ribbon too, but I can see that it’s not too practical …
It’s so hard to decide if you don’t know the gender! I like the bow but not so big, but if it’s gonna be a girl I think a crochet flower would be awesome too (using a bit of the yarn to match the hat, plus some other colors). An I-cord would be good if it’s a boy. Maybe you can include a “coupon” when you give it at the shower that says “gender specific embellishment forthcoming!”
What a darling hat! I will add my vote to the “anti-ribbon” contingent, because I believe that the ribbon would just be a target for chewing and drooling [by the baby, I mean ;)] I think the i-cord could stand up much better to abuse.

Beautiful bonnet. As a tired mother of three, bag the bow. It’s so…redundant. Takes away from the sweet baby in the bonnet. (I thought it amusing that I have three balls of two different colors of Wool Cotton that I can never figure out what to do with!)
I love the hat and love that it’s a quickie knit!
I like the bonnet a lot but I’m not crazy about the ribbon, particularly not with the huge bow. Maybe with a small bow? I-cord would also look great.

as i don’t have kids myself i say go for the ribbon … i’m sure it will look great on the baby for at least five minutes …
I love that bonnett. Now I need the book… my girlfriend is having a girl in June. I wouldn’t do the bow/ribbon. I think it’s nice just simple as it is or the i-cord idea sounds good, too.

Did you knit it up in one piece? No sewing up the back? If you did, I would completely love to know how you did that! I’m right at that part and I can’t seem to get it to look the way they have it in the book. Oh and for the record - I’m doing icord for the ties and would like to do a little flower to go on one side. Thank you, Amy
