Cascading Leaves Socks

Tuesday, January 25th, 2005

I started these new socks (free pattern from Townsend Socks KAL) in the Sandnes Sisu yarn I bought a while ago… Cast on and knit the leg while watching The O.C…. These are quick to knit and the pattern is pretty and easy to do… I was a little disappointed that the pattern didn’t continue down the front of the foot. I guess I could have modified the pattern to do that, but, ah, I just got lazy!

Highgate Sleeves…

Tuesday, January 25th, 2005

So the back piece is finished! There is a tiny mistake in that one of my cable crossovers is overlapping the wrong way, but there was no way I was going to rip back. Forget it. I’m cabled out for a while too, which is why I cast on for the sleeves next, two-up of course:

My husband, the sock knitter

Tuesday, January 18th, 2005

Last night, when my husband came to pick me up after work, he proclaimed: “I think I’m ready to start my first knitting project.” A few weeks ago, I taught him how to knit and he’s been practicing knits and purls on 20 stitches of worsted wool. So far, he’s discovered that he prefers Addi’s and that he finds most yarn too itchy, leaving higher-priced yarns like Filatura di Crosa Zara okay with him. I’m betting his stash will be more expensive than mine!

So, I asked him, “Well what do you want to knit?” and he replies, without hesitation, “How about socks?”. We go to dinner and I pull out the two Interweave Knits mags that I have in my bag. “There are sock patterns in here. Do you want to look and see if there’s anything you want to make from here?”. He glances down, then around the restaurant to see if anyone has seen that, and says “No. Not here. I’m a closet knitter, don’t you know?”

After dinner, it was off to Michael’s and here’s the sock yarn he picked. Some Patons Kroy Socks in Westport Check Blue and Fair Isle Country (I think). Oh, and he picked up some Patons Classic Wool to knit some fingerless mitts from the “Weekend Knitting” book. Short rows, here we come.

Cotton in January?

Monday, January 17th, 2005

Am I crazy? I’ve all of a sudden become completely obsessed with stashing cotton yarns, NOW, in the middle of January! I think it’s a combination of feeling the pressure of getting winter sweaters finished and also seeing the IK Spring preview — I feel like I need to start knitting for the next season already. Otherwise, we’ll be wearing heavy-duty merino in July…

Of course, Jannette’s Rare Yarns is always ready to oblige and here’s what I ordered from her this morning:

Left: Rowan 4-ply Cotton in “Nightsky”. Right: Rowan Cotton Glace in “Passion” (DK-ish).

Agh. There’s also this overwhelming need to knit up a “Sitcom Chic” cardi for some reason. Anybody have any luck finding Cotton-Ease in Canada?

30 grams, fraternal twins

Sunday, January 16th, 2005

Well, this Friday, I happily brought into the world a healthy pair of fraternal Regia socks — each 30 grams — I weighed them. The problem with that? Well, out of a 100 gm skein of yarn, I have 40 grams left — enough to make another sock! Should I make a set of triplets? Or maybe instead, i’ll knit a tiny pair of baby socks out of the remaining yarn.

Here are the beautiful bouncing socks for you to welcome!

As you can see, I didn’t bother trying to match up the stripes… No, Martha doesn’t live here anymore… These are the most comfortable socks I’ve ever worn! They are just too nice that I can’t bear to wear them outside! Crazy.

This week, I also discovered that I love Elann.com. Super cheap prices, super amazing service and super fast shipping…I love love love it. I bought 10 more skeins of sock yarn (solid coloured), plus 8 skeins of cashmere-ish sock yarn, and more Addi’s. Fabulous. More socks on the way!
