Another FO out of the tub…

This sweater has been sitting in the yarn tub for weeks…waiting for the neckband. So last night, I picked up the stitches and knitted the neckline in the round. The pattern says to knit it flat then seam it up, but if it’s destined to be a tube, why not just knit it as a tube? Disaster struck when I *gasp* ran out of yarn. I had about 5 cm of yarn left to bind off the last two stitches and it just wasn’t going to work, so I frogged the bind off row and a previous row to gain back enough yarn to finish. In fact, the neckband isn’t even as long as it’s supposed to be. Doh, must remember to buy and extra ball for each project!

Another important thing to remember is that you need to avoid knitting selvedges if you want to use mattress stitch later. I decided to knit selvedges because I thought it would make neater edges but in fact it became a problem when I seamed it together… Will avoid knitted selvedges from now on (unless it’s a scarf or something that won’t be seamed).

I think it looks great with the shorter neckline!

It looks great! I love the neckline & the color. Very nice job.

Hi Felicia, you were right. Garter stitch selvedge’d be way to thick to seam up for such bulky yarn as Rowan Big Wool.

Another wonderful project, Felicia! It’s lovely and must be very cosy in cooler weather :-) The neckband looks fine to me and I like the way it drapes around your shoulders. A real nice touch! BTW, are edge stitches and selvages the same thing? Both my latest projects have edge stitches and I plan to use the mattress seam. It was the same with Leafy Raglan and the seams looked ok to me… maybe because the yarn is lighter weight?

Hi Lyn! Hmm, when I say selvedges I mean doing things like knitting the first and last stitch of every row or slipping the first stitch of every row. It makes edges that lie flat (rather than curl in on st. st. pieces). I’m sure it would be ok with a lighter weight yarn because you could put more “fabric” into the seams and it wouldn’t necessarily bulk up like it does with Big Wool. Yay, mattress stitch!
