Sleepless in Savanna

I can’t believe these things cause me to lose sleep.

I have that pile of Jo Sharp Silkroad Aran Tweed that I’ve been trying to find a pattern for and it’s made me a little crazy. After looking through book after book of Jo Sharp patterns, I’ve decided that she makes gorgeous yarn but kind of boring patterns (sorry Jo fans). Happily, I just happened to stop by Urban Yarns and picked up a copy of the new Rebecca 28 (in English!) and found this lovely yellow sweater. But said lovely sweater is to be made in GGH Savanna, a chunky weight yarn (14 sts x 10 cm) and all I have is this tweedy red aran weight yarn (18 sts x 10 cm).

I couldn’t sleep last night because I was trying to calculate: if I made a different size sweater with the Jo Sharp yarn would actually end up being the right size to fit me? I figured that if I make the largest size using my new gauge I would end up with 38.25″ at the bust measurement. This pattern, as written, seems to offer each size between 8 to 10″ of ease. Isn’t that a lot? Won’t that make for a super-baggy sweater? So if my modifications land me with 4 or 5 inches of ease, I’ll have a nice kind of close-fitting sweater which is what I’d like. (…mmmust resist urge to …. order Savanna onlineee…)

He hee Felicia. I’m just deciding what colour to order for this sweater myself! It’s that a gorgeous sweater.

Can you do me a favour? I don’t have the book yet. Could you give me the specs (width, length # of balls) for the XS & S? I’d really appreciate it.

Btw, you’ve ordered from Rikes before right? What was there shipping charge. I’ve sent them a e-mail but they ain’t got back to me yet. Did you have to pay taxes on it?

Hey Adele! Good pick, eh? Yes, yes, I’ve ordered from Rikes and they are awesome. I ordered the GGH Goa which came to 34,74 Euros (cheap compared to what it was selling for here) but the shipping was 20,00 Euros. Ok, not so cheap. Plus, I almost always get dinged at customs. So, I don’t know if it ends up being more cost effective but hey, I couldn’t get it anywhere in Canada. Ooh, plus they sent gummi bears with my order!

    The specs are: Size: 30″/32″, (34″/36″) Yarn: Savanna 500g (550g) (they are 50g balls) Needles: 6mm and 7mm straights, 7mm circs (40cm long) Gauge: 14 sts x 18 rows st st x 4″ on 7mm needles Width: 40cm (45cm) Length from back neck: 67cm

WOW. Adele, you just helped me realize my miscalculations! I was using inches and the schematic is in centimetres…So actually, it’s already quite a close-fitting sweater… I mean for the 30″/32″ size the bust measurement will be 31.5″ (80cm). So that’s pretty darn close-fitting… I must recalculate.

Thank you SOOOOOOO much. Village Yarns just called to see if I wanted to order it. I’m gonna!!!!

My shipping would be 23.00 euros. It’s almost cheaper to get it here. $20.00 less or so to get it from Germany and by the time I’ve paid taxes or duties, it’ll be the same I’m sure as I paid $15.00 on the Calmer.

    Decision made. Thanks!!!!!

We can knit this together if you go ahead!!!

How long will it take for Village Yarns to get it in? I just might… no! I can’t order anything else. The whole point of this exercise is to use what I’ve got.

    What colour are you getting?!?!?

I think I will go ahead and make this but I’ll need to swatch it this weekend to see what I can do… I guess I can always add extra st. st. on each side of the cable to make it the correct final width. BUT I also need to finish the purple shawl, the pink shawl, and the fluffy Phildar sweater before I can start. Likely December. Oh! Looking forward to Christmas holidays already!!!

She didn’t say. Apparantly (mmm, should I share this?) the supplier is about to ship her some stuff. That’s why she called as they will include my yarn in it.

I think I’m going to go with the colour in the mag. What do you think? I’m procrastinating as usual.

Love love love that yellow! But, darn it, I just don’t look good in yellow. Enjoy!

  7. Adele says...

That’s what’s worrying me. You gotta be careful with yellow. Hence, the procrastination. Bloody hell.

FYI, it’s approx. 2 months to get the yarn for Village. I gotta reconsider Rikes I think. That’s too long. I want it done by winter.

Egads! And I thought waiting one month for Ribbon Twist was bad. Rikes was prompt and beautifully packaged!

I think I may go with Rikes. Assuming the shipping charge is right (i’m emailed for confirmation - $36.00 sounds a little extreme) and I get stung on the taxes, it’s $20 cheaper all in all.

I think it would look fab in the Jo Sharp btw.

that is the same yellow sweater i was lusting over on my blog last week. :) but - i just ordered noro silk garden yarn for klaralund and also have a phildar sweater from last year to finish, so i think i’m going to hold out…but it’s so pretty!!!

    Hey Felicia,

I’m trying to figure out what needles to order from Rikes (I need the circulars) and I see online they list the yarn as needing 7 & 8. Do you think that’s mm? I know you said to use 6 & 7mm right. I just wanna make sure before I order.

    Cheers.

  13. Felicia from sweetgeorgia says...

Hey Adele, just checked again and yes, they say 6mm (US 10) and 7 mm (US 10 1/2) needles, 7mm (US 10 1/2) circular… So yes, the 7 and 8 must be millimetres. The 6mm’s are just for ribbing anyway! Good luck!

  14. Adele says...

Thanks Felicia. I actually just went ahead and ordered the 7mm. I figured the 6 were for the ribbing.

If you want the costs of what I ordered (not that I’m trying to tempt you or anything), let me know.

Did any of you knit the cable sweater in Rebecca? I am dying to do it in the yellow but can’t find the yarn. Where did you end up getting it? I’ve never ordered international but I am craving this yarn soooo much. Thanks!

what do you think?
