Brioche, back in the day

Thursday, August 26th, 2004

I used to bake bread. Usually every weekend that I had enough spare time… Ah, but lack of time and South Beach got a hold of me… Yes, yes, next time I have a full day of nothingness, I’ll bake some more bread… Mmm, that fruit and nut loaf from Rose Levy Berenbaum’s Bread Bible would be nice… This brioche is from Julia Child’s book, Baking with Julia: Sift, Knead, Flute, Flour, and Savor… Here is the play-by-play of my brioche baking episode this past January:

I’m working on Knitty’s Cheesy Love now and have almost finished one sleeve! Half an hour to go… See the lovely ruffled edge? But I can’ t imagine how boring it will be to do the other sleeve… I might just have to wait until the front and back are done before I go back to doing another sleeve.

Zara, the first sweater since 1994

I haven’t knit anything since high school… so this is my first knitted sweater (or anything) in about ten years. It’s “Zara” from The Bigger Picture and made from Rowan Big Wool in Best Brown on US 11 and 17 Addi Turbo needles (love them!). I didn’t bind off loosely enough for the collar so that’s why it’s curling over like that… so I’m making another one in Pistachio… to try it again. Besides, they knit up so fast (one weekend!) that it’s all about instant gratification.
